First Choice College

Just wondering:

My real first choice college would be UT - Austin, but it doesn't have give any financial benefits to NMS/NMF students. However, University of Houston does give full tuition to such students. Could I put UH as my first choice college just in case I do choose to go there? What would happen if I put UH as first choice, but decide to go to UT-Austin instead? Would there be any repercussions?

Put UH as your first choice. If a school doesn’t give any money to national merit students, they’re not gonna look at what you list as your first choice school.

Congrats on being a NMF! Good luck.

Just wondering if you have considered Texas A&M. They give generous NM scholarships.

It would depend on your intended major, and other factors, of course, but UT-Austin and UT Houston are VERY DIFFERENT schools, though both are in large cities. There are several colleges in DALLAS who also give good NM scholarships.

Another great school that gives good merit scholarships is Baylor in Waco. Both Baylor and A&M are in smaller cities, if that is an important factor to you.

Just a thought, but my DD would have certainly considered TX A&M very closely if they offered her intended major.

No repercussions.

However, you don’t have to name a first choice now or even soon. You have many months to name a first choice…so wait. As mentioned above, there are other schools with large NMF scholarships that you might want to consider as well.
