First Class Registration

Just to let you know registration is open on Gweb until a few weeks into the semester. If you don't like your classes check back everyday to see if any classes have opened up. Last semester I switched my classes at least 6 times before I was happy with what I had (I wouldn’t recommend it, though). Also, watch out for random classes which have openings. Be sure to check the bulletin afterwards to make sure there are no prerequisites.

Thanks... but at this point, doesn't he have to wait until after July 8th? or can he go back on now, and try to get a different UW20 class?

hi, im registering on the 8th but i was wondering if any of you guys made a schedule for an international affairs major?
i was thinking:
UW, intro to international affairs, sociological anthropology,
painting, and russian.
is this two much (18 credits?) does that impact fin. aid?
im so confused, i tried calling and all they said was
4-5 classes is good
.
thanks!

Russian, from what I hear, doesn't have a high retention rate especially among first-timers. 18 credits might be pushing it. You do have the first 2 weeks of classes to feel out your schedule and make any necessary adjustments.

gwcurrentstudent, what language did you take? I've taken french for forever, but I want to switch it up and try something new.

I'd like to take italian, but everyone always talks about how useless it is and tries to lead me back to spanish. Grr...

wow, that was almost too easy... now I'm worried I missed something.

lily --

I think 18 credits is too much. As far as I understand it, the tuition that you're paying next year covers 12-17 credits, not 18. One easy way to avoid this is instead of taking, say, a 4 credit UW first semester along with those classes, take a 3 credit course instead. Voila, 17 credits.

I'm an international affairs major as well. I decided that I would try to get some of the 4 credit classes out of the way first semester so that I wouldn't be stuck with a bunch of 4 credit GCRs later (even though I still sort of am). I'm taking Spanish (4 credits), UW (4 credits), Biological Anthropology (4 credits), and MicroEcon (3 credits), leaving me with 15 credits total. I would have liked to get Intro to Int'l Affairs out of the way, but none of the sections fit into my schedule if I didn't want to wake up at 8. Plus, I decided that I only wanted to take 4 classes first semester, so it worked out well.

My suggestion is instead of taking Intro to Int'l Affairs, for example (or UW), take PSC001, which I think is required for Elliott (sorry, I don't really know the course names, I just have all the codes written down from when I made my schedule). That way, you're getting a GCR out of the way, and it's only 3 credits, so you're schedule is within the 17 credit limit.

Just a point of information, at least it was this way last year: GW did not charge for the 1 extra credit of UW writing....my daughter carried 18 credits second semester last year including UW20. Her registration reflected 18 credits, but only 17 billable credits. She learned this at advising session during CI and it was again confirmed during the Freshman Pro-Seminar advising sessions. You should check with GW just to be sure this policy hasn't changed. In general (aside from UW20) you may carry up to 17 credits without incurring over-load charges, and some schools/departments require permission from them to over-load if you choose to do so and pay the additional tuition charge. My daughter carried 17 credits first semester and 18 second semester. Remember that you can also ask these questions during CI advising. And registration will re-open in July. My daughter tweaked her schedule after orginally registering during CI. I think pre-registering before CI is a great idea. There were a lot of very tired and very stressed students trying to register at 8 am on the last day of CI! Good luck to you new Colonials and hope you have a great freshman experience.

I took French.

Take whichever language interests you. I've talked to numerous State dept Foreign Service Officers who have worked in countries that never utilized the languages they learned in high school or college. It's good to have a language under your belt (any language). It's college: explore your interests.

i just finished registering (10am is when i began the process, lol)
and I am reallly happy with my schedule!
Ill have 6 classes and 17 credits which is a lot but i can always
drop a class.
(intn'l affairs major)....UW020, socio.anthropology, yoga, general
psychology, russian for heritage speakers, and intro to comp. politics.
stupid Question:
we only had to register for the fall semester, correct?
lol, im pretty happy right now.

Hey Lily, congrats on the schedule. Yoga sounds really cool, how many credits is that/how many days a week? I'd definitely be interested in something like that.

And yeah, we only had to register for the fall.

Congrats on getting what you wanted. I got all of the classes I wanted with the prof and time I wanted to, except my uw20 (City Stories w/ Matlock) is the 8 am class instead of the 930 class. boo

which uw20 did you get?

thanks! yoga in mon/wed 10-10:50 @ MV.....should be fun! its 1 credit.
i have gen. psych @ 8am and im nooot a morning person, but two
times a week is okay, lol.
i had no idea UW classes were themed so i signed up for what i could
get and i found out later on, im stuck with a bizarre theme: graphic comics and anime as history. odd. oh well, cant wait for CI4 and 86 days till 1st day of classes!!!!!

As I said before, my son didn't know they were themed either.... he ended up with something like artists in urban life. He's hoping to be able to switch after CI. He's going June 30th.

i wonder what they do with these themes....
cause i woulnt want to write about anime. cant really
move anything in my schedule though, i was so surprised
it all fit.

we had no idea. It should have been better publicized. Try to get it changed. But after getting closed out of the first 2 dozen UWs he tried to get, he was just excited to find one that was still open. First day to change is July 8th. He'll be at his summer camp job, so I'll probably log in for him and see if I can change something. It was very confusing.

Is UW20 only a semester course? Is the registration process second semester of freshman year similar to this process? My D didn't register for it this semester.

GW parent here. Yes UW20 is only a one-semester course. My daughter also didn't fit one in first semester but go one second semester with no difficulty. Registration for second semester is similar and usually happens in Nov. of fall term. The registration schedule will be posted on the registrar's site well in advance. Fall 06 registration guidelines are still posted there if you want to read through it. All students are assigned registration according to number of credits they have already completed (not including current semester). students with 90 credits register first, then 75 credits, then 55 credits then 30 credits. students with less than 30 credits (freshmen) register on the second-to-last and last day according to their last name...and they alternate the alphabet...for spring registration the L-Z group went first...for fall 06 the A-K group went first....like the initial registration it is done online, registration usually opens at 7 am each day...and for the freshmen group...equal numbers of class spots are reserved for both days of registration...so those going last have an equal shot as the first group. AP credit counts as completed credits (gave my daughter a bump up one day when registering this spring) Freshmen advisors had to sign off on the web before students can access registration on their assigned day. D was much more confident registering for second semester and actually added-dropped a couple of classes first week after attending first classes. For both spring semester this year and upcoming fall semester she got all the classes she needed and most were her first choice. It gets easier. Good luck to your D as she begins her freshman year.

i took a yoga class first semester too. on the vern, with stuart. it was alot of fun!
and for the people thinking about taking psc 003, i recommend professor rector.

cool, im so excited...is yoga a laid back kind of thing...cause people keep telling me 6 classes 17 credits is a lot.....but its only 5 real classes so that shouldnt be bad.
anyone doing work study? is 17 credits too much if you havta work?
