first day at new job

i just started my job as baggie-boy at ralphs. it was VERY long and actually tiring of standing up for about 4 straight hours....is it like this every time? i mean this saturday i am working a 9 hour shift...do u get used to the long hours spent on putting groceries in bags?

Hi --

I used to be a bagger at Albertson's, and while at first it seemed like a lot of work, I got used to it, and you learn how, when, and where to slack off and have a little bit of fun. I wasnt strictly bagging, but I also helped old people (sorry, senior citizens), sweeped, flirting with cashiers, and joked around with coworkers.

I remember working on Friday nights until close and coming back that saturday at 7am to 12pm.. ow

It's really not THAT bad.. as long as you working around good people

i remember being really tired as a sales associate at a department store on my first day, but you eventually get used to 8-hour workdays and you'll be okay.

yeah just do what you can to make it fun, help people, joke, keep your attitude up :) work can be alright. dont look at the clock!

Oh man, bagging groceries sucks. I worked as a bagger this summer but quit. There is nothing worse than working 3-10 on Friday nights.

My coworkers could be funny sometimes, but when it was busy I couldn't stand working. I'm glad I'm done with that job.

I worked at the movie theaters..it sucked...I was an usher..all youd o is clean theaters after the movie is done in a timely manner so it will be ready for the next movie..there is so much work involved..and the pay sucked..

i am already over my job. i get paid less than minimum wage (cuz of taxes), my manager and some of my coworkers dont really seem to like me (maybe cuz i am the youngest and making money just for expenses while some are working for a living, i dont know...), bagging groceries gets old after a while, having to do a "shopping cart run" cant get much worse. my manager yelled at me saturday night (after 7 hours of work) cuz i took a 1 minute break when i wasnt supposed to. plus i a 15 minute break for every 5 hours of work. my weekend are pretty much ruined cuz i have to work about 15 hours on saturday/sunday. i dont hang out with friends anymore etc....i am really tired when i get home so i dont have the energy to do homework which is why my grades are slipping. it only been 2 weeks and i am sick of my job. what should i do?

Movie Theater pay does suck.. I think the ones in this area all pay minimum wage or very close to it

Welcome to the real world, where you have to manage time well enough to have a job and schoolwork and a social life. Get used to it.

^did u have to work in high school?

Wear comfortable shoes and take some ibuprofen!

I work as a bagger too, its not that bad, its actually pretty nice. I work the late night weekend shifts so I just sit on my butt most of the time and read the magazines and talk to my co-workers.

^my manager would NEVER let us read magazines. he is always like "you can read magazines while you;re on your break" or "if i am not sitting down, you shouldnt be sitting down, now go do something productive for the store."

I worked at a coffee store, and I lasted six months until I was driven mad by the small-mindedness of the owners, even more so than my ever-aching feet.

A little off topic, but I have a coffee shop question. Why do they have tip jars on the counter? Are they giving some exceptional personal service other than pouring my coffee?

i decided that today i am going to call the manager and give him "two weeks notice" that i am leaving. reasons are: 23 hours a week is way too much. i am paying around $.75 per hour on labor union fees which help me in NO way at all. the job is extremely boring. and with taxes and other fees deducted, i am making around $5.50-5.75 an HOUR.

Maybe you could find a job related to your academic interests or hobbies?

i already applied to Circuit city because i am really good with electronics. if that doesnt work out i will try to work in a surf shop because surfing is another one of my hobbies.

It will be easier to work hard if you like it. My son doesn't mind working 12 hour days because he loves his job.

Take this little lesson to heart when you plan for adult employment. So many on this board seem to be chasing the money. But you have to like your work, and no amount of money will make up for having a job you hate.

your right about that. this job as a cashier has also taught me how important it is to get a college degree and try hard in life in order to get a good job because when i am looking at other bagger boys<---except they are in their 30s,40s,even 50s...i tell myself that i never want to be doing that as a full-time job.

ps whats ur son's job?
