First Gen College Student Chances at Duke

Hi guys! New here (member, been lurking for quite some time) and I was looking to get some input for my chances at Duke University. They are my ultimate choice (like thousands of other students) and I was just wanting to here some honest feedback on what people thought my chances were. I am currently a senior at a charter school in NC. Here are my stats:

NC Resident
First Generation College Student
4.85 GPA (W)
3.9 GPA (UW)
33 ACT

I have taken 7 (max) classes per year (only 6 this year) and all core classes have been at Honors or AP level. All level three and above Fine Arts and Foreign Language were also at a Honors level (Currently in Spanish 5 and Art 4). Will have taken 5 AP classes by graduation (max is 6).

Member of NHS, National Spanish HS, National Art HS and Mu Theta Alpha. Vice President of NAHS. Also active in several clubs throughout HS, including being President of Impact club (faith based club) and VP last year. Member of Marching band for 3 years (no longer option at our school), two in Color Guard and one in Percussion. Varsity Cheerleader this year as well.

Outside of school, I have logged over 300 service hours, including 125 in the medical field.

Please let me know what you think!

You have the stats to be considered by Duke, however, so do thousands of other applicants. Are you an URM (Native American, African-American, or Hispanic)? If so, that will help. Your ECs are respectable, however your competition will have national or regional awards and recognition.

Show your passion in essays, find good recommenders, and be sure to have plenty of match and safety level colleges on your list. Best of luck.

Thanks so much @fauve I am not a URM, but hopeful that being First Generation College student is helpful as well. I feel like my essays are great and I have recommendations for Duke coming from one teacher who is a Duke grad, as well as one coming from one of the doctors that I have mentored with.

I do have plenty of other colleges on my list (8-all matches or safeties) and have already been admitted into two. It has always been my dream to go to Duke though.

Duke is a match for you.

^ Duke isn’t a match for anyone.

Duke isnt an ivy.

Anyone else have any feedback? I know that with Duke you never know where you are going to land. I also really like the Honors Program at University of SC. Anyone with any thoughts on that?
