Hi, I was wondering if anyone knew if the first-gen hook is a strong one, particularly for Brown?
According to Brown’s CDS, it considers the first-gen hook as much as ethic/racial status, legacy, and state residency, not to say that these things can be equally compared.
Which is to say, out of four possibilities:
Very Important
Important
Considered
Not Considered
First Generation status at Brown is “considered”
You can check this on any college’s Common Data Set, item C7. Of the ones I’ve looked at for any college, first gen status is usually either in the “considered” column or “not considered.” It’s just a little nudge at best.
First Gen is more of an accommodation than a hook. It’s not like there’s a shortage of 1st Gen applications.
^Right. It’s nice at the end of the day for Brown to say X% of the freshmen class are first gen – but they’re not knocking over reams of top candidates simply to admit them. It’s a “consideration”, not a hook, IMHO.
have you considered the Questbridge program? The deadlines are soon but this might be good for you.
Good luck
The deadline already passed, but I submitted my application for QB already. Semifinalist decisions come out later this month! Also thank you, I wasn’t really sure whether first gen was something that worked in my favor or not, so I was just wondering what other people thought. Thank you!
Under Ruth Simmons (past president), first gen was a bona fide hook – she directed the admissions office to accept more first gen students. Now there is a new president and a new admissions director. The number of first gen students dropped last year. Not sure if that was accidental or a policy change.
definitely an advantage! good luck!
