first generation attendance

Hey,

I was wondering what people mean when they say this?

What if my parents went to college in China?
Am I first generation college attendance?

in order to be first-generation college student, NEITHER one of your parents attended college.

Most colleges classify applicants as first-generation college students if neither parent holds a college degree, whether its 2-year degree or higher.

If your parents holds a college degree in China, then you won't be a first-gen. (Bending the rules... some people ... don't put their parents as college graduates since it cannot be verified within the US. I'm not sure if it works with Chinese colleges though.)

Please don't try to bend the rules. Get in on your own merit. If it comes down to whether or not both parents went to college, and in which country, your application isn't strong enough. Not saying you'll try to do something like that, just my opinion.

i head some chinese kid got caught doing that at my school and he got in bigggg trouble.

What if one of your parents attended college for a little bit (less than a semester) and then dropped out? Can you still put down that you are first gen, since neither of your parents hold degrees?

Yes, it only applies when the parent(s) has/have degree(s).

^ no you are wrong. most colleges will say even your parents attending college does not count.

Do you have examples? From what I've read, including at Florida Student Scholarship and Grant Programs, Counseling Center, University of Illinois First-Generation College Students and First-generation students struggle to find their place in college , if the parents don't have a degree it's g2g. INSIGHT newsletter says differently. Now I'm confused...

^ it really depends on the college you are applying to. some colleges view first-generation as this way or others another way but generally speaking from hearing others, first-generation usually means neither one of your parents ATTENDED college.

Thx for clarifying.
