first generation college student

does being a first generation college student affect admissions (at ivies) much?

is it really a "hook"?

thanks.

It helps, but not really very much (I'm a 1st gen, btw). It's certainly not a hook.

My GC told me (being one myself) it was a hook, but not a huge one. It also depends on the college. The top universities love to have them, but it's better if they are URM's and first generation or have another hook too. She said it wont replace poor grades, but they give more leverage to those kids knowing certain experiences might of not been there. At my "working class" school, she has about 25-50% of kids like that and sees differences in acceptances over the years. I only heard it once from an admission officer at Yale, last year. He didn't elaborate, but he said "we all like to get them", so I guess they feel like they are "helping" a new generation. : )

chingching - first gen AND low income AND high achieving AND URM, that's a hook. None of those components by itself is a hook.
