Hi,

Both my parents went to college, but never graduated/received a degree while at college.
Does this make me a First Generation College Student?

If so, do First Generation students have more of a chance of getting accepted into college?

Please and Thank You

Some colleges would not consider you first generation since your parents attended college. Some parents would consider you first generation. Most colleges make admissions decisions mainly on stats, and at most, being first generation would be a very minor tip factor.

You’re not a first generation college student, since your parents (the generation before you) were college students.

Being a first generation college student does help. How much it helps varies from school to school.

You should contact the colleges that you are applying to. Ask them what they consider to be “first-generation” college students. Many want to know only the highest level of degree achieved by the parents.

Applications ask for the highest level of education for each parent and if they earned a degree. You provide this information, and the school decides if you fit under their definition of first-gen.
