first generation college students

Hello everyone. While filling out a scholarship application I came across the question of if I am a first generation college student; however I am unsure. My father did not recieve a college education, and my mother recieved an associate's degree after two years of schooling. I am wondering if only bachelor's degrees are considered though. Does my mother's associate's degree does not make me a first generation student? Thank you in advance for your help

Ask the scholarship committee if you qualify as first gen. Some organizations consider one first gen only if none of your parents attended college at all. Other organizations consider one first gen if neither parent got a 4-year college degree.

Northstarmom couldn’t have said it better, different scholarship committees have different standards. Better to verify it with them first, and if you can’t get to them - you’d probably be safer off listing yourself NOT as a first generational student - rather than checking yourself off as one, qualifying for the scholarship, only to find out that it’s been revoked since you’re not really first gen according to the standards of the committee.
