FIRST GENERATION??? Mom w/ Associates Degree?

Guys, am I a first generation college student or not?

My mother immigrated from South America in her twenties, learned English, and received a 2-year associate of science from a community college. My dad never went to college, and has a general scorn of the whole idea.

Virginia Tech and some other state schools designate first-gen as someone whose parents did not go to undergraduate college and receive 4-year degrees.

I've had nearly no support or help in the admissions process from parents, so this label is somewhat appropriate - but do I really qualify?

Also, do you all know of any schools that particularly favor first-gens/underprivileged minorities?

Thanks, and good luck to all.

not first gen.

It probably depends on the school. I'd say don't say you're first gen since the deadline is probably quite soon, but ASAP call the individual colleges and ask for clarification. If some colleges call you first-gen, I'm sure they will allow you to amend your application.

The fact is that she went to a college, even a 2 year program.
You're not first gen. Don't try and cheat the system :)
