My guidance counselors have been telling me to put down first generation because my dad got his Bachelor's from Mexico. Whenever applications allow me to name the university he attended I do that, but there's times they only ask if I'm first generation or if my parents earned a degree.

I do know my dad had to get his GED after coming to the US. Don't know if that makes a difference or not.

College/programs have different definitions of first gen, thus the reason for asking for the college history of your parents rather than ‘Are you first gen?’.

However if a parent got a bachelor’s degree ANYWHERE, you are not first gen by ANY definition. The fact that your father’s degree is from Mexico does not matter, you are not first gen to college.

P.S. This is a FAQ; if you would have used the Search function for ‘first gen’, you would have found many threads that gave you this answer.
