Also, a couple of my friends and I have started probono college admissions counseling.
The website is suphoenixproject.com

What a great story! Good luck to you as you complete your college career and beyond!

Hey Mr. Tubbz…nice of you to stop by! Your website is stupendously well thought out and hats off to you and your classmates for reaching out and promising to mentor three students each! Seems like a concept worth repeating on other campuses.

Would you kindly drop us a line sometime with a Before and After mentoring anecdote? you don’t have to ID the actual schools or break the confidentiality of your mentees… but we would all enjoy what you or your classmates were able to do in terms of encouragement and tools and good outcomes for some other bright young adults who will access the wonders and pleasures of four years of a fine education. So send us a report on how you Stanford kids are doing regarding your Mentorship goals some fine day.

Hope your final two years of Stanford do not “fly by” but go by like a dream…slowly and with many surprises. Hope you are adding dear friends every year to your life to help you in good times and bad as you enter the work force and life.

Bet your mother deserves a lot of credit for her vision for you and for her ability to read you and to recognize your potential…and bet your father has reasons aplenty to be proud of his son.

best wishes and take care!

Thank you for keeping up with us . Your project looks great. Please do keep track of positive results - not just for CC parents, but for the future job references for your volunteers.

LOVE to hear happy updates! Thanks for posting.

I looked at your website. What a great project! I will definitely recommend it to kids I know.

I know this is an old thread, but…the OP was on NBC nightly news tonight on the “Making a Difference” segment.

That is fabulous!! I got chills reading the old posts.

Google this kid - I mean young man. He is a mover and a shaker. Truly inspirational.

Is this him?

[Making a Difference](http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/40153870/)

How incredible, someone that you parents helped encourage years ago. He kept in touch and he has become an outstanding citizen!

Thanks for the link! (There are 2 videos there, so stick around after the first one)

Mr Tubbz goes to Stockton

22 yr old city councilman… fantastic!

This post brought tears to my eyes, especially after I watched the NBC segment. I started reading it from the beginning, and it wasn’t until I reached the end that I saw the NBC news piece. What a great post! It is a written history (just like reading an old diary) of kind CC folks making a difference just by offering encouragement to those who need it and the posts capturing the uncertainties and excitement, blow by blow, of the college application process. And I haved always loved those “Making a Difference” segments! The world needs more of them to remind us of how many good things are happening every day. And what an incredible tribute to the parents on CC (and this post) who helped Michael Tubbs!

Wow. I have goose bumps and tears. I started reading this thread from the beginning, and then googled him, found this: [Stanford Daily | Michael Tubbs elected to Stockton City Council with 60 percent of vote](Michael Tubbs elected to Stockton City Council with 60 percent of vote)

then came to the end of this thread and saw the news clip.

Wow. What an incredible story and an incredible guy. Bravo.

Wow, what a wonderful video. And quite a beautiful thread to review again.

Cheers to Mr Tubbz as he deals with real urban problems that most people are loathe to address.

May fine people in his community find him and support him with constructive help as he follows his dreams, enters his 20s and sorts out the quests of exploring his adult self.

Stanford made a great decision when he was admitted. Hoping life has been fulfilling for him on all levels.

here’s more: [Founder | The Phoenix Scholars](http://phoenixscholars.org/610-2/)

i can’t believe that any colleges rejected him!!

Prefect, thank you very much for reviving the post and telling us about the Making a Difference video. How inspirational.

Wow, awesome! Thanks for sharing!

(ETA:: It’s also really cool that he mentions “our” Carolyn! I’m happy to hear that he is dong so well and acting so generously. An exemplar to be sure!)

If these stories (on the Phoenix page) aren’t arguments for Questbridge and looking beyond the stats, I don’t know what is.

Great update! Great young man! I know we’ll be seeing more of Mr Tubbz and I’m so glad he kept his focus and made time to give back.

SdonCC, that he was rejected at several top schools is a good reminder of how these schools are lottery schools and how it is important to apply to several.

I saw the story on the news tonight and thought “what a great young man”.
So cool to get on CC and read his whole story.
