Loved the update. I love that he gave Carolyn thanks in his bio. She was a great resource for many of us long time Ccers.

When I saw it on TV, I was stunned, when I heard the name Michael Tubbs I remembered him as he was applying to college when my oldest was applying. I told my kids to come on here and read his posts, and see what he had to overcome to be where he is today. My daughter that is his age was humbled.

What a truly gifted young man. He will do great things.

Omg this is inspiring :’)

As a successful mentee under his program, I would like to attest and commend all of his efforts to give back to the community.

With many low-income, 1st gen, minority students not having any support, whether vocal or economical, to go to college, let alone a top private, I think we can all agree that this is no small feat.

I hope one day, more programs can be established, and we could have even more success stories like Michael’s.

BrownQB17, may Brown be a foundation in your life, an academic thrill, a place for beloved and respected teachers and dear friends that last a lifetime. Thanks for posting as a Phoenix Scholar mentee in Mr. Tubb’s program. awesome. Be true to your school, and give it your all…and you will reap warm returns for a lifetime. thanks for sharing a bit of your happiness with us–I am sure you worked hard for this opportunity, and somewhere down the line you will pay it forward in your own unique way

Glad Carolyn was mentioned. I think of her often:)

A wonderful thread!

I am posting so I can find this story later to show my students. Mr. Tubbs is inspiring and I am sure he will be a successful council man. This story also confirms my decision to stop practicing law and do admissions counseling for the underserved and Middle class. Keep up the good work and it is nice to see that you are definitely paying it forward Mr. Tubbs.

@itsv

I wonder if he realizes how his story has touched so many people! I have forwarded this to many of my friends… they are so happy/proud!

I csan see him being president one day.

On another note, I hope things worked out for fromthesouth. He was obviously hurting, poor kid.

what a fantastic story to share with others!

@itsv, you don’t know how much you helped me with a first-gen. student I have been working with since her sophomore year. You responded to a post of mine in the Hispanic thread and were so helpful to us. I agree, your choice to leave law is the right one :).

Wonderful next chapter! And good for Stockton!

@Consolation, I wondered the same thing. I hope he made out. Sounded like he had some painful issues that he was dealing with.

You should look at Harvard, Stanford, Williams, Wesleyan, Occidental, Pomona, Northwestern, Michigan, Cal, UCLA, UVA, Brown, Yale, Tufts, UNC-CH, among others. Best of luck!

^ I think you missed something…I think you missed a LOT!

He got Into Stanford, graduated, and just got elected councilman in Stockton, at 22. And he started a mentoring program, while he was at it, and gave props to Carolyn who helped him out In 09.

Omg I love this.
Who’s cutting onions? ∩__∩

Bumping this thread to post - you guys might be interested in Michael Tubbs’ TedXStanford talk posted 5 days ago. I don’t think I can link to YouTube, but it should be easy to find. Good luck, young man. We are all pulling for you.

Thanks for bumping this. I was not on CC back in 2007 when his journey began - but I am excited for him now and looking forward to hearing about this young man in the future.
