First-generation URM

So how good is being a URM for admissions? More specifically, a first-generation (I assume this means you moved here from a URM country, such as Colombia, when you were say 9 years old) URM?

Some people say it helps a lot (like, it can give you that extra push), some others say it's not really a difference.

thanks,
ansar

you’re not a first-generation - you’re an immigrant, which helps even more. it’s definitely considered a big hook for colleges.

First-generation means you’re the first person in your family to go to college (except maybe older siblings)–in other words, your parents didn’t go. What you described is an immigrant. URM + immigrant + first-generation status = very compelling if combined with a very strong resume.

Oh, cool. :D

Yeah, hispanic immigrant.
My parents both went to Med school in Colombia, though : /
