Can someone clarify what it means to be first generation? My mom was born in the Philippines and moved to America and I was born here, but my dad was born here as well. What would that make me?
First gen means your parents did not graduate from college.
First generation college student has no clear definition, but it has nothing to do with immigration status. Typically, you answer the questions regarding your parents’ education on the application and the school will determine it. In some cases, even if your parents did not graduate but went to a college may make you not eligible.
If my parents graduated from college in Romania (You get admitted based off of one test score), but never attended american college, does that count as first generation?
I read somewhere on the Brown University website that that would be count.
^ Probably not.
Yeah, I didn’t think so either, but a girl can dream.
First gen might give you a slight edge over someone else, but not a huge advantage.
