First generation?

Hello all,

I was just wondering how much you think being a first generation college student helps in the admission process. My guidance counselor seems to think its a real big plus but I am not to sure about it.

Thanks!

BTW I am not a URM

It isn't a "real big plus". It will give you a slight edge when two identical applications are being considered though.

(I am first gen. as well).

what constitutes first gen?

Your parents have not attended college.

Ehh, your parents just came in this country, and you were the first American-born.

i think they mean first generation college student.

jeena> You are correct.

Just a theoretical question:
What if my grandparents went to college, but my parents didn't? The forms just ask for your parents so you would most likely be considered a first generation student even though you actually aren't..... Any thoughts on this?
