First impressions-CPW

Just the way things work. There are some of us out here that have never been to MIT and never will till August when we go for freshman orientation. For those who were able to make it to the CPW, can you tell us (or me) what your impression of MIT was when you got there? You can elaborate to talk about the things that you like there and those you dont.
I am now certain that MIT's the place for me. And yeah, how are the rooms? Do people share or do all students have single rooms? And how big are they? So we can know what to and what not to bring along.
Thank you all.

I'll let everybody else answer with impressions and stories, but here's room info.

Most rooms for freshmen are doubles, but there are several dorms in which freshmen have singles. There's a thread in the main MIT forum from a few weeks ago in which we discuss which dorms those are. And dorm rooms are big enough to live in comfortably, but not much bigger. :) So try to keep the "stuff" to a minimum. You can always buy more if you need it, but it's harder to get rid of a lot of it!

I LOVED it! :) :)

I'm 95% sure of MIT right now (I haven't visited Caltech yet...) just because it's... so amazing. Like, I expected it to be... more nerdy? OK so it is nerdy -- but the people are awesome, and the social kind of nerdy. I made friends right away with a couple different groups of prefrosh, and I talked with upperclassmen from different places. The greek life is pretty cool too -- I had no idea that other college kids party at MIT frats!

I thought most of the dorms were small, some of them were old, but most seemed cozy. I'm looking at Baker and Simmons just because I liked the atmosphere in both of them -- Baker's open-door policy is cool.

Anyway. It's amazing, CPW was awesome and informative and the parties were sweet. :)

Now I just have to do all the homework that I missed while I was gone (booo...)

haha, yeah, i have a bit of work to do b/c of the 2 missed days. but CPW was simply great. Pretty informative, and gave me a good impression of how MIT is. I'm not more excited to go there. Boston is amazing, too.

Going back to High school is impossible now. MIT, just let me come study now!

I thought it was pretty cool, cooler than I expected that's for sure. Met a lot of cool people, there were alot of cool things to do, and the weather was cool. hehe

I thought the campus was really dingy and depressing though, and the weather added to the dingyness factor.

And I must also add alot of the labels/generalizations did hold true, the students did seem a bit overwhelmed with work and were mostly a bit nerdy/reserved (in comparison to other colleges) that is of course in general;there were PLENTY of cool talkative/extrapersonal people as well

I think I had the best CPW ever... I mean, come on, I won a whip. How many people can say they went to MIT and won a sex toy?

I'll post details later so I can x-post between here and LiveJournal.

CPW was one of the best times i've ever had. It was a nice break for all of us from school, work, etc. How perfectly were the activities planned! There was definately something for everyone, whether it was learning math early in the morning or slurping down some ice cream frozen with liquid nitrogen. Personally, I felt at ONE with the college when I was on top of the pyramid sometime during 1:30 AM. Then I knew that it was truly meant to be....:)

Heh, I had a similar moment, mittener.

I was walking down Memorial Lane with sdasterisk and right as I passed Killian Court and noticed I was in between the huge DARWIN and NEWTON engravings, looking dead at the MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY on the Infinite that I turned to her and said, "We're here."

Bwar. It still hasn't fully hit me. And I hope it never does. :)

It hasn't even fully hit me.

Memorial *Drive.

vs. memory lane

the tangerine tour was freakin' awesome, although it did get quite hot in that one place towards the end

I got back yesterday. It was absolutely fantastic. My first admit weekend :). The campus was very interesting, and I was really impressed by the architecture. I met tons of crazy genius kids, and also reunited with some of my former math/science camp/internship friends :). Wooh!

The tour was pretty good. Took fricken FOREVER though. Way too many kids. I can only imagine the Orange Tours at orientation.

And the steam tunnel was damn hot.

No kidding. I was in the last group: 10pm to 3:30am...but I loved (almost) every moment of it. :-P
Yeah...the boiler room. I got quite a kick out of seeing a pipe marked "Acid Waste" next to me as the group slowly descended into "hell." ;-)

Btw, I heard that they limit the number of kids on the Orange Tours...as they're on for several nights instead of one.

Aw man - the Acid Waste tube was hella funny. We all laughed.

I thought the damn ladder was a ladder UP to the outside...until it was my turn to go in and I rounded the corner and peered down...orangy HELL.

I think I lost my flashlight on a roof. :( And I missed the meet-the-bloggers party, so I guess I didn't get to meet a bunch of you, too bad.

I don't believe any words can encompass or convey the way I felt and what I experienced. I don't think I really believe that I've actually visited even the state of Massachusetts, let alone MIT, let alone as an admitted student.

I will try to post something longer, later.. the words that come to me right now include 'wow'.

yea i missed the bloggers party too, but had an awesome time at my frat. CPW was such a blast! already getting bored back home - how do we finish high school?

gah i vowed to not come back to CC after college admissions was overrr. hahaha
