First job

I'm a senior in HS trying to find my first job. Nothing fancy--daycare, hobby lobby, movie theater, etc. However, I'm not quite sure how to "approach" the manager about a job. I am thinking about calling by phone to inquire about open positions.

What can I say to avoid being too blunt or awkward over the phone?

Thanks.

The easiest thing is to walk around the local mall or shopping area and look for help wanted signs. Besides that, calling and asking if they are currently hiring or accepting applications is fine. Blunt, but not rude is fine. If they're hiring, they'll direct you to their website or say to come in and pick up an application. If not, you didn't lose anything. As for askward, that is something you can avoid with some confidence. (ie. practice speaking on the phone without saying um, yeah, I was wondering if like you like are hiring, etc)

You'll usually not get the manager, and it's a reasonable question. Some of the job search websites could also be helpful. Best of luck!

craigslist has helped me out A LOT!!!!

Also wal-mart is always looking for new souls.

Start with places that you might really want to work. For instance, if you love animals, try the local vet's or kennel. You might be surprised what's available. If you like kids, try camps. Good luck!
