Hi guys this is my first post so bear with me if ramble or am not clear enough.
I'm a high school senior from Northern NJ and was pretty confident about college until I got denied from top two choices, and now I'm really scared about getting into GW. I'm applying to The Elliot School as an International Relations major with a focus in economics regular decision. I have a 3.6 GPA but with a Huge upward trend, I went from a 3.3 freshman year to a 3.5 sophomore year, a 4.05 Junior year, and finally I'm maintaing about a 4.2 this year. By the end of the year I will have taken 10 AP tests (5 AP classes prior to senior year) and got a 790 on the World History SAT II along with a 750 on the US History SAT II. I got a 1990 on the SAT (680 Math, 680 Reading, and a 620 Writing), however these scores are countered by A-'s in pre-calc as well as A-s in two years of AP English. In terms of extracurriculars I went to Boy-state for New Jersey, and am also a board member for my school's Model UN team, a member of my school's chapter of FBLA, and the lead opinion writer for my schools newspaper. In addition to taking spanish in school, I also speak Hebrew fluently and my application indicates such. I spoke with the admissions rep for my area multiple times and feel that I left a good impression on her as well as having an extremely impressive interview. I'm really nervous but if you guys could chance me and be honest I would extremely gracious.

Hello,

Was your admissions director Danielle? She was mine, and I’m from Norther NJ. An up-ward trend in GPA is certainly positive, but the 3.6 (overall) definitely really isn’t desirable. A jump from 3.5 Sophomore year to a 4.05 Junior year is particularly inconsistent. Nevertheless, your SAT scores do fall in range.

It could go either way, but admission to The Elliot School of International Affairs is particularly difficult—from what I remember. I would say you have a chance of being admitted, but I wouldn’t say you’re in for sure. It’ll really be dependent on your supplemental essays, regular essay, recommendations, and other factors GW finds important.

Good luck!

My admissions rep is Dannielle! I would say that my supplemental and regular essays were very strong and my recommendations were excellent. Thanks so Much!

What were your other top choices? Also in the D.C. area?

I’d say you have a good shot! I know kids who got in ED with much lower stats than you. Granted they were ED but your course load is much more challenging and I’d say you’re still a very competitive applicant. Your demonstrated interest will probably help too!

I don’t really think it is relevant but I got differed from both The University Michigan and Virginia (UVA). Through a family friend I have an internship working in the Secretary of Defense’s office if i go to GW, so I kind of want to go to GW regardless of my results at the other two schools.
