Hi,
I'm applying to Kenyon college early decision, and they requested my first quarter grades for senior year. My school is known to them, very, very well, and I am taking all advanced courses, and one double advanced. I received a C in math, and that worries me. Math is the subject that has been the one B among all the A's, so they can tell I'm not coming to be a math major, but the C still worries me. How much could it potentially affect me being accepted? I love Kenyon, and I hope I've made that known, and I really hope the C won't be dug into too much.
Thanks

If you have to submit an official Q1 report with a C in math your GC probably knows the best way to present/explain the situation since Kenyon knows your HS so well. Maybe you can talk to your math teacher and get a vote of confidence from him/her that you are still on track to finish the semester strongly (hopefully with a B) and maybe better if you think you can pull up your grade by semester finals?

They were submitted on Friday (12/5) and my guidance counselor said it gave her a chance to put the C in perspective and say more about me. But could a C hurt that much? Because the college really just sees it on paper, and then my GC told them what’s behind that. It’s advanced calculus, the hardest math I’ve taken. So with the rigor of the class, how bad could the C look?

I guess it really depends on the rest of your application. One C in advanced calc shouldn’t be a deal beaker (rejection) if everything else- recs, essay, scores, extra curriculars- are all strong. But we don’t of course have a crystal ball. If you wind up with a deferral it might be worth getting an additional rec from that math teacher if your GC thinks it is a good idea (and if you think the math teacher would put in a good word for you as far as work ethic etc.). Especially if you can raise the grade by the end of the semester. I’m absolutely not an expert on this but those are my thoughts on the matter- sounds like you might have a helpful GC, so I would trust his/her advice.

I went on an overnight to Kenyon and stayed in a first year dorm. While I was there I talked to so Freshmen who was planning on being a math and physics double major. He told me that his senior year he got a bunch of Cs, so I don’t know how much it really matters. To put it in context though, this kid did finish calculus III in like his junior or senior year, and had all AP and honors classes, so I don’t know if you look anything like that, but I don’t think one C will do much if you didn’t express that you wanted to be a math major. I think it will all turnout. Good luck!
