Our school doesn't really give quarter grades but will calculate them for schools like Duke that request them. Does anyone know how important they are? Most of our big tests are second quarter so there isn't that much for the teachers to go on.

I know that most schools want to see that you are not taking a holiday in your senior year. Courses should be rigorous and your grades competitive. Not sure how much Duke looks into a grade when it is not final. If you have b's that will become A's I doubt they would be taken aback by it.

But how could they know they will become As? We've only had 2 AB calc tests, and pretty much the whole class got a D on the first one, since we all missed the same question (one of three). Hopefully the teacher will give me a B for the quarter, but the school might just send the two test grades -nothing else to go on. Oh well....there's always RD but it sure would be nice not to wait around until spring.

If you are taking rigorous classes and only have part of the grade I don't think that woukd keep you especially ED. Duke will look at you in context with others with similar test scores and grades. My S who attends said the dean of admissions explained even for SAT scores they don't look at the kid who scores a 2350 more than the one who scores a 2300 for example. They understand that within a set range- whatever that range is, all the students have enough capability to suceed. Focus on great essays...
