To current UCI students: what was your first quarter schedule like?
I want to know because my SPOP is soon and I would like an idea of what classes I should pick.

I took 16 units my first quarter and got demolished. Thinking back, it was a pretty easy schedule, but I was unprepared for the shift from HS to college:

Biology 93 (DNA or Organisms)
Math 2D (Multivariable calculus)
Writing 39B
Chemistry 1A

This was my lowest GPA quarter in 3 years + summers.

im thinking about

math2b
chem 1a
physics 7
human 20c

engineering major… good?

i took 13 units and it worked really well

bio 93
chem 1a
writing 39B
some bio seminar

chem 1a i pretty easy especially if yo have taken chemistry before or have some background. i havent taken the other classes so I dont know. i think your first quarter is the hardest because you are meeting so many new people and adjusting to college. since most classes dont have daily homework or tests, you are stuck with one or two midterms and a final that makes up most of your grade which is very different from high school.

@t1lui: sounds good but you should try to get writing 39A or B instead of the human 20c class if you can so that you can get the lower division writing over with. what kind of engineering major are you btw?

This was my first quarter schedule as an Aerospace Engineer:
Physics 7A/LA
Chem 1A
Chem 1LE
Writing 39B

16 units. it was okay

Math 2j, physics 7A, ICS 21

i had 12 units for my first quarter… art history 40a, basic drawing, and writing 39b. i had way too much free time.

it’s important to consider:
a) how much time you are willing to spend studying (ie: decent social life? no social life?)
b) what kind of grades you want
c) if you’re the type of person who can understand things easily and retain what you learn, or do you need a lot of studying just to get by
d) difficulty of classes

I’m thinking about…

Bio 93
Writing 39b
Chem 1a
Math 2b

I’m a bio major.

Freshman here. Physics major, Im planning to do:

Math 2B
Phys 7
Human Core

That’s 17 units, but I don’t think I have a choice, Here goes nothin!

my advice is not to take >12 units your first quarter. feel it out mang, you still have a lot of time in between graduation. just use your first quarter as feeling out the waters.

I really don’t think my schedule is that flexible, Phys 7 and math 2B are foundation classes I’ve got to have. The CHP hum core is meant to destroy us right? ha ha
Thanks for the advice, I’ve wondered what other students recommend

Thanks everyone.
As for me, I’m thinking about taking Econ 20A, Math 2B, and Humanities 1A.
Do you think it’s enough?

chem 51a/la
physics 7a/la
phil 5
math 2d/2e at a local JC IVC

phil 5 was bs, phys 7a was a JOKE. chem 51a was pretty easy, didnt know why everyone complained about ochem (still dont). i didnt like multit var calc…

What’s a typical first quarter for civil engineers?

How about this guys?

Chem 1a
Math 2b
writing 39b
and one of those engineering course

what do you guys think? I want to be a chem Eng and I hear its good to take a engineering class right away to see if you like the major or not. haha. and also this is passed off if I passed the physics placement test.

the catalog has “recommended” plans for various majors.
