How important are they?
My first three years GPA is GOOD.
However, this year I'm talking all ap's, and I haven't been putting too much effort in some of them. As a result, I'm most likely to get 70-79 for math and science, with other grades being in the B+/A- range. I'm not applying to Ivies, but I am appyling to some picky colleges (NYU for example). Have I completely screwed my record? :''(

bump >:)

I am wondering the same thing.

Are you talking about EA/ED or regular? If you apply early, the colleges probably won't see your first quarter grades. I know my school doesn't send them. But if you're applying regular, they'll see your first semester grades in..March, I think? I think they're important, but not as important as the other years. As long as you have about the same grades as last year it shouldn't make a big difference. Plus, you have a quarter to pull them up.

they might matter if ure applying regular decision

If you are applyint ED unless you present something that would make you an automatic admit (and very few will), colleges will see and may request your first quarter grades and will make a decision based on them (especially if they are on the fence about you). If they feel they don't have sufficient information, you will be deferred to the RD round.

No. I'm not applying in ED/EA, just regular.
However, the apps are due in december, while I'm getting my second quarter grades in late January.

IF you are applying RD, the colleges will definitely ask for your mid year grades the counselors usually have to turn them in along with their recommendations/evaluations by mid feb.

Your senior year grades can definitely mess you up. Hopefully you will put in the "effort" next quarter and bring your grades back up.

they are important if you're on the fence or are waitlisted or something... i think they are very important. because if you've been getting all As and then all of a sudden drop to Bs, then there's something going on. also, senior year is when people are taking many AP classes, so grades do drop...
the Cs will kill you. A-s and B+ won't.

oh so even though RD deadline is january, they still look at first semester grades? my first semester grades comes around february 7th.

Yes all colleges will look at first semester grades. It's critical to keep those grades up senior year.
