First Sem -- EECS / Pre Med -- Rhetoric, Philo, or otherwise?

Hi everyone,

Kind of a tricky situation here but I'll do my best to explain it.

I need some help deciding on my fourth class for fall (and spring, I suppose) semester of my freshman year at Cal :) I am an incoming EECS major but am considering a pre-med route so I would like to take a writing course that will help me fulfill both requirements.

I have a 5 on English Lang AP already, so I should have the first half of the requirement complete, right? So do I only need one semester of writing for EECS and med schools in general? (or do med schools require a whole year..?) Assuming it is just a semester, what is a good choice to fulfill that second half? I enjoy literature and analysis as well as rhetorical writing but I would rather have an A on my transcript than have to suffer through hours and hours of an extremely difficult class, also.

On the other hand, I've really been looking forward to taking Philo 6 or 7 with Prof. Dreyfus who I have heard good things about.. and I suppose I could delay that to spring semester. But does it really matter if I take the English requirement second semester?

Actually I'm quite confused; it seems like there are three different writing requirements? (a UC one, a Cal one and a CoE one) which seem to at least partially overlap .. so I'm hoping in the process of answering my questions you might be able to clarify this for me?

edit: oops.. another question. This "R1B" I keep hearing about. Is that English R1B or Rhetoric R1B? I was under the impression that the "R" was an abbreviation for Rhetoric but it seems that may not be the case?..

Thank you VERY MUCH for reading this and I would really appreciate any help I could get on the matter! :)

med schools want a year of english, even if u passed out of r&c with AP/IB credits. It doesnt matter when you take it, as long as its done before you graduate.

Do they have to be rhetoric or can they be literature focused?
Also do they need to be upper-div?
Thanks :)

Maybe I'll take one of those in the spring and another in my soph year

You can't delay the Dreyfus course because it doesn't appear he is teaching a course in the Spring. Go to philosophy.berkeley.edu to see the spring schedule.

R1B is a type of class, not specifically english and rhetoric only. There's a list of accepted classes that fulfill the R1B requirement at the CoE website I think. Examples are like Scandinavian or like Asian American Studies, etc. There's a lot to choose from. At least that's how I'm understanding R1B to be.

nope, dont need to be upper divs. You can take r1a/b series if you like as far as I know. But keep the syllabi for the english classes you decide to take to use as credit for med school. At least that's what it says on the career center med school pamphlet I have. haha

Don't ever do EECS/premed. You will regret it.

Thanks for being relevant :)

Nah, let him try and find his way from premed to "postmed."

pretty soon we'll usher into a new era of post-medernism. haha

well, pre-med or not, is it reasonable to postpone the R&C req to second semester in favor of getting Philo 6 first sem? i've heard great things about that class.

I don't see why there would be any harm in waiting for R&C especially since you only have to take one class to fulfill the requirement.
