First semester and not doing so great

Hello guys, I am a Physics Major with Pre-med starting the first semester of college. The problem is that so far I have not been doing so hot in any of my classes and I am getting a little discouraged. I want to say that my GPA will probably be around 2.7(lowest estimate) to 3.0 for the first semester from the grades I am getting so far. Is there still plenty of time to make this up?

Also I know one of the pre-med classes you need is Physics. Will medical schools accept Calculus Based Physics instead of Algebra based Physics for that prerequisite?

All pre-meds at D’s school are taking non-calc based physics, and D. cleared it with her pre-med advisor. Why don’t you talk about your whole situation including choice of physics with your pre-med advisor? Also, discuss with your prof’s and/or their assistants how you can improve. Ask specific / detailed questions, make sure you understand material 100%. It is not a good idea to rely on making up later, classes are getting harder.

Calc-based is fine, as is algebra. Most premeds take alebgra-based b/c it’s easier.

Getting a 3.0 first semester won’t kill you, but it means you need to do an AMAZING job from here on out! Remember, the average applicant has a 3.44 (3.04-3.84) and the average accepted student (at any school) has a 3.65 (3.25-4.0). Also, realize that 60% of applicants won’t get in anywhere. Hopefully, that’s a bit of a wakeup call. You can still recover this, but you’re going to need to do some serious work. If you continue to be just barely pushing a 3.0, it’s highly unlikely you’ll be going to medical school in the next 4-6 years.

Anyway, as was suggested, you should talk to your profs, seek out tutoring, etc. Do anything and everything necessary to become successful!

It’s October, semester ends in December. That’s almost 3 solid months (and 75% of the total semester) to make up for things. If you’ve messed up on the first tests of each of your classes, do whatever it takes to make for it.

In most cases, it shouldn’t be too late to manage a 3.25. You may want to consider why you aren’t doing as well as you would like to.

^^^ I agree, you still have a lot of time to do well (75 pecent material still left to cover)…I suggest you talk with your professors in their office hours on how you can turn around your grades.

What type of school are you at? For some schools a 3.25 is Dean’s List. In any case, first semester is to get used to many things besides the academics. Is it too late to drop one of the classes w/o penalty so you can concentrate on the rest?

If you’re a physics major, you’ll need the hard physics classes won’t you?
