First Semester at Cal

I am going to start my freshman year at Cal next year, and my CalSO is coming up on June 4th/5th, and I was looking into what classes to take. I am in the College of Letters and Science, planning on majoring in Molecular and Cellular Biology.
So I was thinking about taking Math 1A, Chem 1A, Asian Studies 10, and Spanish 4. The Math and Chem classes are for the MCB lower div requirements. Asian Studies is to fulfill one of my 7 course breadth requirements. Spanish 4 I believe also fulfills a 7 course breadth requirement, and plus I LOVE Spanish (I took 4 years of it in high school, got a 4 on the AP exam) and Spanish is something that comes pretty easily to me. I'm a bit rusty on it but planning to practice this summer, and my Spanish isn't bad. Calculus was always not that hard for me and I did better than a lot of my peers (not saying I'm better than them, just saying grade-wise and performance-wise). Chem I got a 3 on the AP test.

Now, my question is, would this be too difficult a semester? I know Cal isn't easy, but I'm going in with the mindset of working very hard. But I'm not sure, since I've never taken a class at Cal, is this too rigorous? Or can I handle it if I work hard?

Also, if I did this schedule, which classes should I sign up for in my Phase I of Telebears?

Any thoughts guys?

I’m also MCB this fall and I’ve been having the same question. However I won’t be taking Math 1A since I’ve taken Calc at my local college. Chem 1A seems to be standard first semester.

That seems like a pretty good schedule for you. Chem 1A/Math 1A are standard freshman first semester classes and they will require a good amount of studying, but the other classes balance it out.

afc10ns: Do you know what track you want to do? I’m thinking Immunology and Pathogenesis

flutterfly_28: Thanks for the input! :)

Biochemistry or Biological Chemistry. Any ideas what to take instead of Math 1A?

Bio 1B unless you can skip it with AP Bio

I can skip it with AP Bio but would that be a wise choice?

don’t AP out of Bio1B if you’re considering med school even slightly.

^I agree with that statement. Med schools want you to actually take all the classes at the university.

Does anyone know what classes I should sign up for in Phase I?

All the classes? You mean the pre-med classes correct? Though med-school isn’t my plan at the moment, surely they won’t care if I AP out of Literature and History.

afc10ns - you are correct, it is only the med school required classes (premed stuff like chem, bio, physics but calculus is the exception and can be waived). Any other class not required for the medical school is fine to AP and waived. Only a handful of cases exist where the class must be taken at Cal (AC, R&C, a few classes required for a major).

I think I’ll take Chem 1A, Japanese, an easy Philosophy course, and Math 53
