I'm going to be a freshman next year, and I have my orientation on the 12th of June.
I've been checking out some of the classes that I can register for, and I was wondering if any physics students or anyone with familiarity with the physics major could give me their opinion on which classes to take in the first semester.

I do plan on doing UROP (provided I get in), so I'm planning on taking 4 classes (14-15 credits).

I’d prefer to take Calc I to get an easy A and keep my gpa up, but I’ll be coming in with 6 credits for some general education classes (introduction to philosophy & introduction to ethics), not sure what good those would do me.

I thought you could combine pre-med with any major & still be ok?
I already had AP Calculus as a senior in high school, so I expect that I’d at least have an easier time in Calc 1, right?

I have more credits, but the problem is that they are in courses that are required for medical school. And I heard that medical schools like to see a high grade in those subjects rather than AP credit, so I doubt I’d use the AP credit for those courses

Jake, you can do premed and physics in 4 years just fine. Also, I think med schools would prefer you take subsequent courses than take the same courses over again. Though your grade might differ depending on which you do.

Former academic peer adviser here; couldn’t agree more with the bolded text. Unless you really feel that you haven’t retained enough to take a subsequent class (which will almost certainly have a few lectures of review anyway), you shouldn’t even consider retaking anything, ever. Probably safe to assume that your UMich classes will be harder and/or require more work than whatever you took previously.
