Your grades are fine. Just realize that even if you had a 4.0 from now till your senior year, your chances would still be extremly slim.

When you say my grades are fine, do you mean that my chances are slim because there is a whole nation of applicants who will have 4.0’s thought and some will get rejected still? (sorry if I sound stuck up) Can you suggest better matches? (I feel so stupid asking this)

It is a bit of both, your chances are slim because everybodies chances are slim, but they are worse because of your GPA. Remember that saying you will get a 4.0 for the rest of high school is a lot easier said then done. I would not recommend taking honors math next year, it seems that honors math is not an appropriate level for you. We cannot suggest matches at this point, we have a one semester GPA (which is low based on what schools it seems you are looking at), no test scores and no ECs. Come back for suggestions regarding schools no earlier then the end of sophomore year.

Thats exactly what i meant. I think that for your position your grades are totally understandable and yes, i mean your chances are slim because of how MANY people apply and how few Harvard accepts. But dont think i am trying to be negative, i am not. You should still work hard and realize that you are still early in the game. I do not have specific matches, but while I think that it is fine to strive for Harvard, realize that the chances are slim. Also, there are MANY wonderful schools out there, Harvard is only one. Good luck just work hard and stay motivated you will be fine :D

How will colleges look at my first semester freshman year?

It depends on the school. Some don’t look at freshman year at all (but know that this is a limited number of schools), some value junior year the most followed by sophomore year followed by freshman year and some value all three years equally though. No matter which type they all value class rank, yours will be forever lowered by the one semester. But really stop worrying for right now. First improve your grades and then worry about how colleges will treat your first semester. It is extremely hard to have the grade jump that you anticipate even if you are hard-working and motivated. Again I emphasize I do not recommend that sophomore schedule based on your current grades. Speaking from personal experience, honors chem and honors algebra 2 are some of the hardest classes I have ever taken (and I have taken every honors and AP class I could).

I have to agree with the above. I am currently in honors chem and algebra, and they are very difficult. Challenge yourself, dont kill yourself (academically speaking).
