I’d say that’s awesome, especially considering you’re a freshman in one of the hardest majors on campus. I’ve heard the average engineering GPA here is a 2.7. I know freshmen right now who have 1.9 GPAs and are at risk of being put on probation, so you’re definitely doing good if you’re giving it your all. Maybe shoot for a little higher next semester so you can be a james scholar. Either way congrats on a good first semester!

You need to get on the UIUC Reddit - /r/UIUC. Probation beings at below 2.0, as poster above me mentioned.

I can’t give you advice on here as I’m not in university, but I’d ask in the reddit and they’re all gonna tell you that you’re worrying for no reason. Good luck.

I agree with the two previous posts. You are fine. GPAs in engineering are not the same as in other majors. The early classes are definitely “weed out” in nature. Persevere and try not to be discouraged.

Freshman year is definitely a big adjustment for everyone. My husband graduated from engineering. I graduated with a chemistry degree. We both remember the dreaded ‘bell curve grading’ of the large intro classes. It gets better if you work hard and stay motivated.

I’ll share a personal story. The semester my husband and I started dating our grades took a hit. His more so. It really put the scare in him. That GPA bothered him all summer. He committed himself to improve his grades, while we still dated. He got straight As by senior year and went on to a top grad school. He attributes the turnaround to a new focus and in his words, better classes (smaller in size, taught by some outstanding professors.)

So what I’m trying to say is it’s good to care about your grades, but cut yourself a little slack. Focus on figuring things out for what works for you. It’s hard not to constantly compare yourself to others, however it can make you miserable. Stay true to your goals and work hard to attain them. You can do it. Good luck to you!
