Hi, so I'm a first year at Emory and i just got my grades... I wasn't completely happy with them

my first semester GPA ended up being 3.1 and I was wondering if this is considered decent or poor...

Here's a breakdown on the classes I took and the grades i received:
Ceramics(For a GER): A-
Chemistry: C-
Freshman Seminar: A
Life Science calc: B

I was planning on majoring in some life science and going premed with that, but halfway through the semester i decided that i want to do economics (i took a college class over the summer and found it interesting). I'm either thinking of teaching(college), business, or corporate law as a career path now and I was wondering if anyone could give an evaluation of how i did my first semester!

also how my first semester GPA would affect me, assuming i have an upward trend GPA-wise until i graduate, applying to top grad, business or law schools...and med school if i end up staying on the pre-med track

Well, I would say this is rather mediocre. It all really depends on the course load really, if you got a 3.1 taking physics, biology, chemistry, and calculus and classes of that nature, it would definitely be a good GPA considering the course load.

First semester does matter a ton as long as your grades keep improving, but those are pretty mediocre grades like Tacto said. Considering you aren’t taking many courses and two of them are non-science, you’d probably expect higher. Just make sure you learn from any mistakes this semester!

Considering that it is your first semester away from home, given all the adjustments you have to do to get used to University life, I would congratulate you! A 3.1 depending on the school, a 3.1 is a B, which is the necessary grade for applying for graduate programs, so if you have an up-ward trend you will be just fine!

I had the same thing but I only had three classes (dropped one). I definitely could have had all A’s but I didn’t put in even minimal effort in some of my classes and some stuff happened that really messed with my head before my German final (stayed up 24 hours straight and didn’t study any that entire stretch before the final).

I’m not happy with the grades because they weren’t really hard courses…but considering all the bad things that happened this semester I’m decently happy with them.
