I am a Pre-med freshman with a major in biology. I got my grades a couple months back and have not worried since. In high school I was a good student with about a 3.9 GPA. In my first semester I took Intro Bio, Writing, Calc I and a couple of Honors courses in humanities and philosophy. I got a 4.0 in bio, 3.7 in math, writing and humanities, and a 3.0 (B) in philosophy.

Ever since I got these grades back I have been very nervous about how that one B has impacted my grade and GPA in the future for Med school. I was happy with everything but that B (awful teacher but hey it happens- Two papers throughout the semester and graded very harshly-he considers a B an outstanding grade).

Are my chances shot? Am I still in good shape if I only go up from here? Thoughts? Advice? Anything is appreciated. Thanks!

You are fine. One B will not kill your chance.

Welcome to the world of college where some professor will believe very few deserve an A from him/her.

With this said, you have not taken many prereqs for med schools yet. Still some hurdles ahead. Keep up the work and you should be fine if both your sGPA and your overall GPA are about A- after all prereq classes.

Depending on which college and which high school you attended, a 3.9 GPA in college and a 3.9 in high school could be quite different in their difficulties. Work your best, but should adjust your expectation if needed. Otherwise you may stress yourself out. DS knew a Valedictorian from a high school, and he ran a big risk of not getting any single straight A in any humanity classes at his college. It was a big headache for him in his premed journey! (If he went to a college where he could APed out these classes, he could get a much higher GPA as he’s a science nerd.
