First Semester Grades

I am a college freshman and I have enjoyed my first semester. However, I did not do as well as I had hoped (how typical). I did get As in my lab classes, but only scraped solid Bs in my cell biology and gen chem I classes. I did fine in my other classes, but I am more concerned about my science GPA being high. I started out strong but felt burned out when it came to finals and messed up on them. Procrastination and a lack of focus nailed me. Bs aren't bad but I'm a little embarrassed because those were introductory classes....haven't even hit organic chem yet. Looking at the average GPA of accepted students to medical school worries me.

I'm just wondering how this will affect me for the future. I'm fairly certain that this is definitely a career that I want to pursue and I'm willing to work for it, despite minor setbacks, as long as I know that I still have a reasonable chance. I'm not ready to be "weeded out" yet :p.

Thank you for any thoughts, suggestions, comments, etc. in advance!

You’re doing fine. Also, you seem to have figured out your weaknesses - procrastination and lack of focus - so just work on those.

Am I still “in the running” though? Would it be better to re-take at least one class over again? (another pre-med girl I know is doing that…no idea what her grade was) I’m kicking myself because I wanted to get As in the easier pre-reqs just in case I slip in organic chem and physics >_<. Hoping next semester goes as planned :p.

You’re definitely still in the running. No one semester or bad grade is going to “kill” your chances; a trend of those might.

You should not retake a class unless you got a D in it or something. The general reaction to retakes is not good from an admissions point of view. If you get an A, it’s like “of course he got an A, he already took the class once before.” If you don’t get an A, it’s “he took the class twice and still couldn’t muster an A?” So don’t worry about what you’ve gotten in these classes anymore; continue with the rest of your pre-reqs/other classes and make sure you do well in those.
