Could any current students comment on what I hope to be my schedule this fall?

Honors FYS: Western California Geology (based around a trip to California)
Honors Econ 101
Poli 101, Into to American Govt
Phil 155, Intro to Mathematical Logic, OR HIST 128, American History Since 1865
STOR 155, Into to Stats, OR MATH 231, Calc I

Most of my prereqs are taken care of. There will be a lifetime fitness class thrown in there.

I'm considering retaking Calc I, despite the fact that I will most likely get a 5 on the AP exam. Calc's always been easy for me.

Is my schedule too hard? I really don't want a difficult schedule--at all--first semester; I want to get involved on campus and have an active social life.

If you get a 5 on the AP exam you may not be allowed to retake Calc 1 because it would violate the Honor Code. It happened to my son when he tried to do the same type of thing.

Because of scheduling problems his senior year of HS he was only able to take AP AB Calc but then actually took the AP BC exam and got a 5 on it. He wanted to take the class at UNC and they automatically put him in a more advanced class for math/chem majors and would not allow him to take the lower class.

Actually, you can retake Calc 1, but you have to give up your AP Credit for AP Calc AB (I believe you can keep all your other AP Credit), and there’s no turning back if you do poorly in the class. You can’t ask for your AP Calc AB Credit back once you’ve given it up.

It is, in fact, an honor code violation to take Math 231 if you have not given up your AP Credit. Also, if you give up your AP Calc AB credit, then you have to re-fulfill your Quantitative Reasoning requirement (although, based on your schedule, re-fulfilling it won’t be a problem, I believe if you take Math 231 that’ll re-fulfill QR and Phil 155 gives you the QI requirement).

POLI 101 is State & Local Governments; POLI 100 is Intro to American Government.

Those classes don’t look too bad. It kind of sucks to take all intro courses, though. If you have AP credit you should try to get into something upper-level so that you have at least one smaller class.

I know people who have done the geology field trip class & they loved it!

This might sound stupid to some but i would consider taking regular econ 101 instead of honors because byrns isn’t teaching honors next semester. You would go from a small class to a large lecture but the Byns factor is worth it. Salemi is teaching honors next semester and he’s okay, most people don’t like him. I don’t mind him so much but he is not nearly as interesting or funny as bryns.

Also I don’t know how honors registration works but it can be nearly impossible to get an fys or the fys of your choice because they set aside two places in an fys per ctops session. So if I were you I would have a lot of backup first year seminars ready.

^^good point! I had like 7 possible first-year-seminars ready before I registered…I got my first choices both semesters anyway, though, because my idea of an interesting course is probably kind of different from most people’s…but any seminar that involves a field trip will probably fill up very quickly.

I’ve already signed up for honors classes. And I submitted my registration just a few hours after we all received the email with the course listings, so I think I have a good chance of getting into those. I’ll know for sure in a few weeks.

I think I want to drop one of those math classes and take a writing intensive class. Any good ones out there?

Hello Ephemeral!
…sorry nothing too constructive, since I’m in the same boat you are with plotting classes and hoping they don’t wear me down first semester…

Just wanted to comment we might be in the same Econ 101H class! I’m willing to sacrifice a more amazing professor for a smaller class =\ I turned in the Honors registration within minutes upon receiving the notice too (stayed home that day to cram for AP Euro) so I’m hoping we have a pretty well-set place in there.
…sorry I’m no help.

I had a friend who took the FYS in Geology and loved it! The professor was really cool and had the class over for pizza I believe and I think the bulk of their grade was based on an eight page paper and going on the California trip. I definitely recommend taking a first year seminar b/c they are smaller and although most involve a lot of work, there is a high frequency of A’s given.

Actually, I think I’ll only take 4 classes + a lifetime fitness class for the first semester, as long as I can keep my scholarship with 13 hours.
