I just completed my first semester @ University of Michigan-COE and I am not exactly happy with my results. I took basic prereq classes and only got a 2.96 (OUCH and I need a 3.0 at the end of each year to keep my scholarship from being revoked.)

I'm not much of a party-er (never was never will be) and I thought I did a fair amount of studying. I am also taking 17 credits this upcoming semester(took 15 last semester)
Any advice to improve my gpa would be much appreciated.

Ummm…pulling up your GPA 0.04 should not be that hard. Also, throw that “sample 4 year schedule” out the window. All you need to do is get the grades to get into the last 2 years of the engineering program AND maintain your scholarship. If that means talking 13, 13, 13, 13 and 8 credits during the summer of your sophomore year…then so be it.

If you are an EE major…there is a way to “stagger” the EE, Math & Physics courses so that you can use one course from a department to do well in another. I forget, but I think its like take Diff Eq BEFORE Electric Circuits (since Diff Eqs are in Circuits) then take EE before Physics II (to take advantage of the circuits stuff in Physics)…but don’t quote me on that.

yeah I was interested in EE but after taking my intro programming class I can see that programming is no exactly my forte. I am thinking of majoring in Civil and Environmental.

As for my schedule goes

This semester I am taking

Physics=4 credits
Physics lab=1 credit
Engineering 100(basic engr class)=4 credits
Calc 2= 4 creditss (apparently this is the most failed class in Umich)
Microeconomics= 4 credits

I was thinking of dropping econ and taking 13 credits to allow myself to adjust but people are saying econ is better to take in the winter because of all the B students in the fall. Not to mention I have taken AP econ and I think I got a 4 on both possibly 3s I forget.

Omg thinking about this stuff makes my head spin

Any of your 4 credit courses this semester could be dropped at the slightest hint of difficulty. Physics, Calculus II and Microeconomics are courses that are usually offered every term and summers so you can take the dropped one again this summer.

Calculus II apparently is the hardest class at Clemson too

I got a 3.11 GPA and I am by no means a party-er and I put in about 30 hours of study/homework a week (took 17 credits last semester). Don’t worry about it, you’re in a very good spot to get a 3.0 GPA and with just a little more effort, you can get that 3.0+ easily.

Next semester I’m taking:

Physics With Calculus I = 4 credits
Physics Lab = 1 credit
Calculus With One Variable II = 4 credits
Geology = 3 credits
Geology Lab = 1 credit
Engineering Fundamentals = 2 Credits
History, Science, Technology (General Education class) = 3 credits
