Hi guys,

So I just got my score back today and I was happy with my reading scores but very disappointed with my math and english scores.

Reading-32
Math-32
Science-33
English-27 (@#@!#) - 13 mechanics, 16 rhetoric
Essay: 11 (meh)

I took the ACT cold, but I have scored a 700 on the SAT on the writing section, so I am not sure how I got a 27 on the writing for the ACT. I did find that the format was a lot different than that of the SAT and I somehow ran out of time lol.

Math is my best subject, so I'm pretty sure a couple of dumb mistakes made the 32.

I am horrible at critical reading, but I'll take the 32

I felt that I did very well on the science on the section but I only received a 33 (like 3-4 wrong?)

So do you guys think it is possible for me to get a 33/34 comp after I study/practice over summer?

I think I will use Barrons 36 for the english sections, and the math section, I just have to not be dumb lol.

Also, how can I improve my 33 in Science to a 36?

Thanks

“So do you guys think it is possible for me to get a 33/34 comp after I study/practice over summer?”

Quite possibly. The only two sections you can study for (in my opinion) are Math and English, and you still have a lot of room to improve there. I personally have not used Barrons 36, but I’m sure it will suffice; if you are not satisfied with it, though, I would personally use Princeton Review’s Cracking the ACT- it will cover everything you need to know for those two sections. I used this book when I was in seventh grade (no idea why I thought I needed to take the ACT then), and I haven’t gotten less than a 34 English since then.

“I felt that I did very well on the science on the section but I only received a 33 (like 3-4 wrong?) Also, how can I improve my 33 in Science to a 36?”

Actually, I would say that a 33 is 2-3 wrong; the Science section generally has the worst curve. You are already doing really well in this section, so I would say improving to a 36 is a matter of luck (not getting an overly confusing and time consuming question, not making careless errors, etc.).

“…I did find that the format was a lot different than that of the SAT and I somehow ran out of time lol.”

Yes. In my opinion, the ACT is easier than the SAT in terms of question difficulty, but the time constraints can make it very difficult and stressful, sometimes causing careless mistakes to occur when they ordinarily would not. My advice would be to get the Real ACT book and work through each of the practice tests under normal conditions.

Good luck :)
