First-Time ACT Taker Has Some Questions...

It would really mean a lot for you guys to answer some of my questions, especially since I've primarily been an SAT test taker. I'm familiar with the format, for the most part, but I still have some questions about the test...

The essay is an entirely separate score, correct? As in, it won't affect the English score like the SAT Essay influences with Writing score?

Is there anything special about the December ACT I should keep out for? I heard that they reused a test for last year's December ACT... any predictions what test they'll reuse for this one? I have a lot of old released December ACTs that I'm doing for practice... will they be helpful?

How much longer is the ACT? When do we have breaks?

What do I do about timing myself for science and reading?

What are some helpful hints for taking the test, so I don't get bogged down or thrown off track?

Is it hard to get a 35? I'm trying to get that score so I can be done with testing.

Thanks guys. Anything helpful would mean the world to me. Have a great holiday season... happy testing.

Yes. Your Essay does not affect your composite.

Not that I’m aware of. I really doubt they’d reuse a test that’s publicly available.

It’s 4 to 5 hours. You get a break after the 2nd test.

Get faster, and skip questions that you know will take you longer than they’re worth.

Get a good night’s sleep, and eat a good breakfast. Guaranteed +1 point.

It’s hard. For a very large portion of the population, it’s virtually impossible. Those who are gifted enough to be capable of that kind of score will have to study very hard to get a 35 or 36. Very, very few people can manage a 35. Don’t be disappointed because you didn’t get it. Even a 30 is an outstanding score.

The last practice test I took was December 2003. I got 35 English, 35 Math, 34 Reading, and 36 Science. I’m going to try to do more practice tests and maintain this consistency for the December test. Thanks for the advice!
