First-time chance! Applications done, just curious

I promised myself I wouldn't create a chance thread until after applications were done, so here we go!

Indian male from MI, 16 yrs. old. Middle class family, both parents got a bachelor's degree
Somewhat competitive high school that offers 14 AP classes, of which I took 7
GPA: very slightly less than 4.0 unweighted, ~4.3 weighted (school does not weight heavily)
Class rank: 1 of around 500, but all students with 4.0 or above weighted are 1
ACT: 36 (36M/36R/36S/34W/8E)
SAT: 2280 (750CR, 760 M, 770 W, 8E)
SATII: 800 Math II, 800 Bio E, 800 U.S. History
APs: Biology (5), U.S. Government (5), U.S. History (5), Chemistry (5), Statistics (5), Physics C: Mechanics (5), Physics C: E and M (5), Spanish (5), both English (5s), Calc AB (5), still to take World and Calc BC
Applying for need: Yes
Course load: Probably more difficult than that of 99.5% of school
Recommendations: Good, probably. One of the teachers is an amazing recommendation-writer; the other, I don’t know.
Essays: I think they’re pretty good, but they’re a little offbeat.

ECs:
-Played viola for 7 years, first chair in upper school orchestra, in a quartet consisting of the four best players from the school that accepts paid gigs, also played in pit orchestra for a musical. No lessons. Also, no supplementary materials.
-Science Olympiad member (9-12), captain (11-12), won 10 medals at regional level, 2 at state
-Model UN member (9-12), president (12), won best delegate at a major conference and numerous minor awards; also hosted own conference
-Quiz Bowl (9-12); team was consistently in top 2 of inter-county region; 58th team at NAQT national championships, 28th best individual nationally
-Go Club (11-12); we play the game Go here
-Research at a local university under a postdoc in leaf functional traits/neutral theory for one summer; nothing much came of it
-NHS member
-Attending religious classes/events at the local Jain temple
-~120 of community service total
-No school athletics, no job

Honors:
National AP Scholar
National Merit Semifinalist
Best Debater in Debate Class (haha, not really a major honor)
Won an essay contest for the Jain Society of Greater Detroit
Accepted to the Clark Scholars Program at Texas Tech, a very selective free summer program (which was an amazing experience, and you – yes you – should apply), where I did research in crocodilian phylogenetics. This research will likely be published in a larger paper with me as a primary co-author, but I don’t know when.

Colleges:
University of Michigan and Michigan State – already accepted
Harvard (parental pressure!)
Pomona
Swarthmore
Chicago
Grinnell

If I’m missing any major section, please tell me and I’d be happy to provide it!
Thank you for chancing!

Holy Christ. You have got the package deal. Any and everything from the SAT’s to the GPA. Usually, I would say that Harvard is a reach. But something tells me the EC’s and perfect SAT II’s could get you anywhere. Good luck, but to the looks of your profile, I don’t think you’ll be needing it.

Thanks! By the way, I only submitted SAT IIs to Chicago and Harvard; the rest, to my knowledge, don’t consider them if you use the ACT as your primary test (<-if I’m wrong about this, please, someone, TELL ME NOW! ). I’m not so sure I’ll get in everywhere, but I sure hope so! Would you like me to chance you back? If so, please link your thread here!

More info:
Probably a bio major, with anthro as a second choice. I sent in the abstract to my paper as a supplementary science material to Pomona.
Also, I’d like to know about the possibility of merit aid at Grinnell and Chicago. Possible, or…not?

Harvard - flip of coin
Pomona -match
Swat - dude, it all depends on why Swat essay
Chicago-match
Grinnell - match

good luck, your stats are awesome!
chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/840035-im-baaack-hah-chance-me-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

Thank you! My Why Swat essay was probably the one I was most unsure about. I was really specific about why I wanted to go to Swat, and I made it clear I love the college. I’m unsure about the writing format.

I will chance you back in a moment!

@areardon: Agreed!

You couldn’t look better on paper. Harvard is a toss-up. Pomona has some ridiculously smart applicants, so that’s a bit of a crapshoot too.

Swarthmore-match
Chicago-match
Grinnell-in

Great stats and ECs!

Harvard - 80% (but you have pretty good chances!)
Pomona -90%
Swat - 90%
Chicago- 89%
Grinnell - 90%

Harvard - 50/50. Being Indian might make it tougher unfortunately :frowning:
Pomona - Good shot
Swarthmore - Match
Chicago - In
Grinnell - In

Chance me?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/840709-start-new-year-right-chance-me-ill-chance-back-i-swear.html</a></p>

Thanks guys! I always thought Pomona and Swat had similar admissions policies, and I thought they were both low reaches. But maybe you’re right, maybe Pomona is more difficult to get into than Swarthmore. Thanks for your chances!

Kldini, I think you may be overestimating, but thanks at least for making me feel better!

And cgb, I’ll do that now. Thanks!

Oops, I’m posting from the West Coast. Pomona’s typically much harder than Swat to get into for kids from my Northern California school.

…I just checked College Board. Swat’s 75th percentile on SAT scores is about 10 points lower per section than Pomona’s 75%ile. Not terribly significant, but just thought you’d like to know. Good luck with everything!

Hey, sorry OT, but do you know how many 36s our good 'ole high school produced from your class?

Congrats on your acceptances so far!

i agree, being indian does make it harder, not by alot though. you’ll definitely make it into more than one of the schools on your list. Harvard is a reach though…maybe even a high one.

chance me back:D
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/841576-please-chance-praying-international-student.html</a></p>

Harvard - really good chance
Pomona - match
Swat - match
Chicago- in
Grinnell - in

Good Luck!

Not sure what being “Indian” has to do with anything…

Oh yea, that’s right. I forgot.

congrats on your acceptance!
i think that you don’t need to worry about any of the schools except Harvard.
with any qualified applicant Harvard is a reach, but you do have a great shot.
UChicago should be a match. All others are safeties for you IMO.
good luck!

Congrats on UMichigan
Harvard is a Reach
Others-In

Thanks everyone! Please post your chance threads if you want to be chanced back!
That makes sense Keilinger - maybe they’re going for geographic diversity? I don’t think anyone else at my school applied to Pomona, and they probably don’t get many applicants from Michigan as a whole.

I think there were three. I can PM you with details if you want.
Thanks!

Well, personally, I’m more worried about Pomona and Swat than Chicago. I’m pretty sure they’re harder to get into, and my Chicago essays were pretty strong.

But you know, if I don’t get into/can’t pay for all of these, then I’m pretty content with MSU, so I’m not horribly worried anyway.

Actually, please do. I’m very curious (although I have a pretty good guess…)

u r in very good shape for all except for harvard.
but why r u applying only to harvard. there is good chance u will get into one of the ivies if u apply more.

I was applying to Harvard out of parental pressure. None of the Ivy Leagues really appeal to me that much. As you can see, I’m more of a liberal arts-type person, and few Ivy Leagues are really good in biology anyway. Plus, I would gouge my eyes out if I had to do any more apps.
Thanks!
