We are parents of a senior, class of 2013. Both of us attended high school outside the United States and did our masters degrees in the U. S. Our son is has narrowed his college list and is about to complete the Common App. I could use all the advise regarding application, tests, scholarships etc. Where, when, what, why, how would be awesome. I have been searching for one place and feel this is where I could get all the nitty gritty details. We also have a Junior 2014 following soon after. Thanks in advance for all the advise and help I am about to get.

What are the schools on his list?
What is his major?
What is his gpa, class rank SAT I, SAT II scores?
Your home state?
Any national awards, Intel, Siemens?
Apply for Financial Aid?
What will you pay per/year?
You can give details but nothing that will identify your kid.

This college counselor has a great summary of much info at her site

[Guide to the Common Application](http://mycollegestreet.com/AppCAGuide.htm)

Maybe get “Acing the College Application” by Hernandez from your library. The author was a former Dartmouth admissions officer and she tells you how to organize your application for best effect.

Welcome! You’re in good company. Lot’s of us find CC when we hit a stress points with our oldest, be it the common app, SAT’s, or just looking for the match/reach/safety list. You’ll find a wealth of information here.

I’m not sure if you’re aware but in the College Admissions forum (on the list to your left) there is a sub-forum just for the Common App. It is an excellent place for everything involving the common app. There’s a great search feature at the top right (blue box “search this thread”) where you can look for previous threads that might address a question on a section your student may be uncertain about. It was really helpful for my son when he filled out the CA in fall 2010.

Lastly, consider joining the parents threads in this forum for each of your students:

You don’t have to read from the beginning, just jump in on the last page and introduce yourself and your student, or read along for a while if you’re more comfortable. The parents groups are great for support especially during the stressful years of SAT/ACT’s, applications, and launching!

What are the schools on his list?Clemson, Drexel, George Washington and Quinnipiac and hopefully UMASS.
What is his major?Pre health pathway leading to medicine
What is his gpa, class rank SAT I, SAT II scores?
Your home state? MA
Any national awards, Intel, Siemens? No. He is only in the mid thirties in class ranking out of 150
Apply for Financial Aid? yes
What will you pay per/year? possibly $15K but that will be a stretch

A B+ student with many sports activities to his credit.Nothing outstanding. He will take his ACT and SAT again, first try was 25 ACT SAT was 1200. He has Clemson, Drexel, George Washington and Quinnipiac on the list and would like eventually do sports medicine. For now being accepted to a pre health program would be ideal.

Is your son’s SAT 1200 out of 1600 or 1200 out of 2400?

The schools that your son interested in should have SAT / ACT scores on their web sites.

Your son should get scores much higher than the 75% percentile to have a shot of any scholarships.

These books were helpful to me:
The New Rules of College Admissions: Ten Former Admissions Officers Reveal What it Takes to Get Into College Today (Fireside Books (Fireside)) by Michael London and Stephen Kramer (Aug 28, 2006)

Acing the College Application: How to Maximize Your Chances for Admission to the College of Your Choice by Michele A. Hern

Clemson doesn’t exactly have a sports medicine program (take a look at the University of Pittsburgh, would’ve loved going there) - let me know though if you have any questions about Clemson!!

You will most likely get no aide at Clemson. Most public universities are not generous with funds for out of state students (there are some exceptions for high stat students.) I live in GA and around here, Clemson is not thought to be generous to out of state students.

Make sure that your son has one or two or even more safeties that you can afford and that he would be happy to attend. A school that he can easily get into, but you can’t afford or he doesn’t like, isn’t really a safety.

A common motto found on this discussion board is “love thy safety”

If you google “Clemson university common data set” (or substitute the other schools) you will get a long form with lots of data - Section C is the most important to applicants – it gives you a range of test scores and GPA’s that were accepted last year - typically you need to be in the top 25% to get merit aid (“typically” - there are exceptions).

One thing I found out about Clemson - they allow you to pick your doem based on when you applied! So if he is serious about Clemson he should fill that app out sooner than later!

His SAT score was out of 2400. Great pointers and lots of work ahead. Does anyone have a good website or book to get started on scholarships?

People are right, if he is not in the top 10% of his high school class, he probably won’t get a lot of scholarships (if any at all) apart from need-based scholarships if he qualifies for them.

You need to register for the retakes of the SAT I now, seats get taken up at local test sites.
Will he take SAT IIs?

Retake the ACT with writing, register for the Sept testing, deadline is August 17th.
