Today, I got my first detention for talking in a mini-fire drill. Actually, I wasn't even talking, my friend was the one talking, so they assumed I was talking too and gave us both detention. So its my first detention, and I'm super worried about it!!
And I guess I'm overreacting a bit, but my mom (she's one of those Asian mom "u must have perfect everything") got really mad and started lecturing me on how now I can't get into a good college anymore, so I'm kind of freaking out right now!
Will my detention decrease my chances of getting into a good college? Thanks for the advice!

The Common Application will ask you the following question:
As you can see, detentions aren’t even significant enough to be included in this list. Most colleges don’t use the Common App, but colleges aren’t going to ask about detentions. They could still find out if it’s on your transcript somewhere, but they’re not going to care.

There are certain situations that also go outside of the boundaries of the question, but are still expected to be answered. OP, just report it if you really think it is necessary

You don’t have to report detentions, unless they are for significant infractions or have occurred multiple times. They are not included in that question.

I know. But detentions are more common than any of the things on the list, so it seems like detentions would be in the list if they wanted to know about them.

I don’t think it’s even worth reporting detentions, especially if it’s very minor.

Okay, I see what you mean. However, do some detentions outweigh others? For example, there are detentions for talking during a fire alarm and there are detentions for serious offenses.

Everybody gets detentions. If you go through high school without getting one, you’re doing something wrong.

@nickxx that’s not really true. I’ve never gotten one and the majority of my classmates haven’t gotten any. Still they are not that big of a deal, especially to colleges.

@guineagirl96 I guess it depends on the school. At my school, everyone who’s normal has gotten a few detentions, including the top kids in my class. The only people who haven’t are the wierd/non-social kids.

For doing what? I’ve always been too lazy to do anything that would get me in trouble.

@nickxx I don’t think that’s really true. I’ve never gotten one and I’m a pretty noisy person. Kids really only get detentions if they show up to school late numerous times without a note.

Detentions at my school are given out like crazy. kids start getting detentions after their 2nd tardy per semester. Talking during an assembly or looking at your phone in class is also a detention.

Why is that? Like ~20 people have had detentions at my school over its 7 year history

When I was a youngster many years ago, my mother could be dramatic. I have heard the you won’t get into a good school lecture. Just sit and take it. The detention will make no difference in your life.
