So one of the schools I'm going to apply to this fall is Iowa State. I just went on their website and went through the online application, filling out everything. I wasn't going to submit it yet, I was just curious what it's going to be like. I'm a little confused... there's no place to submit a high school transcript, so no way for the school to know that the high school grades I submit are actually true. Do I submit my high school transcript after I've been accepted? That's kinda strange if that's true. Also, no places to put ECs or anything like that. All that the application asked for was my personal information, what classes I took and what year, my gpa, ACT/SAT, and a few things that don't apply to me (ROTC, criminal record). Am I missing something?

I just did a little more research and I guess Iowa State allows students to self-report their high school records. This just seems a little strange and I feel like there are downsides to this…

^They will have you submit your high school record after acceptance. If it doesn’t match on what you said, they will take away your acceptance; or at least that is how I think it will work.

One thing any applicant to a college must do is learn about the college and its admission requirements and processes by exploring the website before preparing the application. Obviously you have now found that you can self report your courses, class rank, and grades. Note, you can also choose instead to have your high school send an official transcript. IS states on its site what happens if your self-reported grades differ from those on your final high school transcript that is sent after you are admitted: “Then your offer of admission will be withdrawn.” (There are actually a number of colleges, including the UCs and Illinois, that have you self-report grades rather than send a transcript while reserving the right to withdraw your admission if your final transcript varies from you provided.)

As to why IS does not have you list ECs or even submit an essay, it is because it is a numbers school for admission. As it explains on its site, it calculates a Regent Admission index that uses your test score, class rank, grades, and number of core college prep courses taken to determine that index. If your index is 245 or above and you have completed a designated minimum number of college prep courses you are in.
