hi, I'm a senior at a prestigous private school in houston. My GPA is a "B-/B" average with a couple of AP classes. Consequently, my class rank is very low. Overall, I have done better as I have progressed through high school. On my SAT, I scored a 590-verbal, 640-math, and 710-writing. I do not have many extra cirricular activities but I am senior governing council representative. My essays will be pretty strong since I've been diligently working hard on them and my recommendations should prove my upside. Plus, my school has connections with several Texas colleges. What are my chances of getting into the following schools (and receiving financial aid, if any)? My parents have been paying full tuition for private school all 4 years so we really need some help.

Trinity (San Antonio)
Southwestern
SMU
Baylor
University Of Texas-Austin
University Of Texas-Dallas

Also, I was born in Iran, and migrated here when I was a 18 months old. I'd say my family is middle-class. Only child with 60 year old teacher with 2 teaching jobs and 50 year old hair stylist mother. I've had a couple of jobs (selling phones, carpets), tutored at my old middle school (predominantly Latinos) and done 75 hours of community service. I know it's a lot of info but in my case, I think it counts. If there are any other schools I should consider, please list.

please, I would love to hear any comments on my situation. Im about to go to a college meeting and I'd like to walk in knowing a few things or having heard a few opinions (remember only child here). I know you guys out there have something to say...

For UT, it really depends on what major. For instance, my friend went to UT austin with about 1350 in business major, but he had to take classes there over summer as a condition for going to UT. Business in UT is really competitive.

All schools that are listed, you should be ok. they are your matches. Very good on your writing :) but consider that many public universities in texas look at primarily on math and reading.

thanks kksvolt, I'd say Trinity and Southwestern are at the top of my list (I might apply ed to Trinity) with Baylor being my "safety school." Baylor and my school are very close and my friend's father who is on the board of trustees up in Waco is willing to write a rec for me. I'm hoping the private schools notice and assess the writing score equally, along with the math and verbal...

you are so lucky having baylor for safety hehe. unfortunately for me there's no one i know in any colleges :(

Oh by the way, the friend i mentioned was in the top ten percentile in my school. and are you a international student? i heard international students from middle east have higher change of acceptance than those average white american for public school. not to be a racist or anything. i am a asian too. :)

no, ive been living in Houston my whole life basically, i was only 18 months old when we moved to Texas from Iran... That is good to hear, you would think colleges would be more cautious ever since the terrorist attacks but I'm glad middle easterners are getting a chance to learn in American colleges.
