First university with LAN in dorms

Historical question. I was just wondering.

I have no idea. However, I do know that the university of Wisconsin (Madison) had a soda machine on the network in either 1988 or 1989.

We had a meeting there and one of us wanted a soda. He could not figure out how to put money in the machine. One of the U.Wisconsin students pointed out that he had to order soda from the machine over the network. The student (who is now of course grown up, and who I still am in touch with) got him a soda by typing something on his computer.

I remember CMU announcing many “first campus to…” computing milestones in my ‘82-‘90 student years.

The initial hardware deployment in 1985 established…The campus was fully wired and ready”.

I don’t think our fraternity was included, but iirc many/most school-owned dorms were.

Wireless Andrew was the first campus-wide wireless Internet network. It was built in 1993, predating Wi-Fi branding

Here is an interesting history on what was going on at Virginia Tech in the 90’s and after.

Seems like fairly similar in timing to Dartmouth - so that’s an additional data point, though I don’t know the answer to the OP’s question.

Dartmouth 1984:

The Computing Services’ Telecommunications group began a wiring project that would connect each student’s workspace in residence halls directly to the Kiewit network. Over 2,600 ports were installed in more than 30 buildings. The project was completed by Thanksgiving.

The first digital computer was (and is) at Iowa State.
