First Week

How was your first week of university of Maryland College Park? Anything & Everything is fine. Like how was your move In, First night , first week of classes. Transitioning from home to dorm. Making friends, joining clubs, Parties if any etc. All stories are welcome(:

Today marks the 3rd week of classes. Maybe this year’s freshman are still around and can describe their thoughts so far…I suspect the first week is ancient history to a lot of them!

I’m a freshman this year, haven’t checked this site since moving in (and I’m only on now because I’m bored at work). Move in was great; very easy because I moved in a night early which they opened up because of Hurricane Irene. Even from talking to people who moved in the following day (which was much more crowded) it was very organized and easy. First night was a little boring because I was one of 3 students on my floor who had moved in, but UMD opened up TerpZone for the night which was a good time. First week of classes wasn’t bad because it was just receiving syllabuses (syllabi?) from teachers who were trying to be intimidating. Transitioning from home to dorm wasn’t too bad for me personally, but my roommate was/is having trouble waking up without his mom there to force him to go to class. Making friends is easy; always leave your door open if you’re inside your room, and always enter someone’s room to say hi if their door is open. It sounds strange, but everyone wants to meet new people. A few weeks into the semester they had the First-Look Fair where all the clubs set up tables on the mall with freebies and sign-up sheets; sign up for everything! You don’t have to go to every meeting for every club, but I’ve gone to juggling club, engineers without borders, free stand-up shows, club ultimate practice, and grilling club meets tomorrow  Frats host a lot of parties the first few weeks and encourage freshmen to come, but now they are getting more selective now that rushing has begun. However, you meet people and if you want to party, there is usually that option available. I think you can tell that I’m kind of in love with UMD. Between homework, sporting events, rock climbing @ ERC, work, hanging out, etc, I kind of don’t sleep too much anymore… but I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Awww, UMD sounds amazing. Do you work on campus or ? How’s the food ?

I actually work at McKeldin Library (the main one with testudo in front) at the info desk/welcome desk. If you want/have to work then try and apply for this position over the summer. It’s one of the better jobs from what I’ve heard from others. I live on North Campus so we have the Diner and 251 (the buffet) once a week. The food from the diner is… risky. I either get a salad, wrap, or sandwich unless I’m feeling adventurous. The buffet is good enough to remind you that the food at the diner stinks. However, the food quality really hasn’t been a big deal for anyone that I know
