So if I place into the "Accelerated Intro to Academic Writing" (ENWR 110), does that mean that I am only required to to one 3 credit course either in fall or spring? That's sort of what I interpret it to mean.
And folks who don't place into 110 or who are developing fluency with American English take 2 semesters.
Just want to be sure I'm understanding this correctly. Thanks in advance.

omg. seriously. they'll explain this all to you at orientation, and its on the website. chill. enjoy your summer.

Sorry. It's just in my nature to be prepared. I can't chill until I know that I have all my ducks-in-a-row. What's wrong with that??
BTW, I'm going on a 2 week European cruise (graduation present) and will get back right before orientation............I think I'll be enjoying plenty!!

i am an international student and english. Engish is my first language in school. I finished my IB English. What English course do you think I will be placed in if i get a 5/6 in IB english?
Also, is it possible for international students to be in the course you are in?

(i am assuming that you are not an international student)

Adivse from other posters will be much appreciated too!

Thanks!

these kinds of things are available on the website. please google before asking us.

IB English alone does not affect ENWR placement. The writing section of the SAT does by itself. 200-480 puts you in ENWR 105 in the fall and ENWR 106 in the spring. 490-660 puts you in ENWR 110 in the fall or spring depending on your ID number's final digit. 670-710 puts you in ENWR 210.

Exemption from the first writing requirement can be done with either being in Echols, getting a 720+ in the SAT writing, getting a 5 in AP English Language, getting a 680-710 on SAT writing and a 5+ on IB English A1, getting a 680-710 on SAT writing and a 4 in AP English Language, getting a 700-710 on SAT writing and a 4+ in AP English Literature, or do a portfolio review.

This is assuming that you are a native speaker. English learners have to take ENWR 105 and 107 in the fall and 108 in the spring.

hazelorb is right. Just go to www.virginia.edu and do a UVA web search and you can find all of this information I found. Actually, 51% of the info I give on CC is from UVA web search. I'm just less annoyed with these kinds of threads except the chances threads. I'm just tired of them.

I'm not trying to annoy anyone. Sorry. I've been on the CLAS website and reading about requirements within this college and requirements for all students at UVA. I'm also going through the MyUVA publication one page at a time.
Exactly as you state above, I know that I have placed into the ENWR 110. My question is: does this mean I just take a one semester course that satisfies this requirement? That's how I read it, but I just want to be sure I am correct. I've read all the info, but I still have this nagging question. Is that so wrong??
Maybe Hazelorb should follow her own advice and enjoy her summer. She doesn't have to respond to these questions, particularly if they make her cranky. Take a break.

Yes, see malex's above post. 110 and 210 are both only one semester.

What he said which ultimately what I said. Only being placed in ENWR 105 will make you take another ENWR class to fulfill the first writing requirement.

jimmyjam, you have to understand that hazelorb and us other students have seen almost everything on these boards. Some threads bother members more than others. Something standard as in looking up competency requirements and throughly reading the first writing requirements can grind some people's gears. Seriously, the first writing requirement section said fulfilling the requirement by one of the following: take 210, take 110, or take 105 and 106.

I am not bothered by this at all, but you can see where someone can be annoyed by this. Anyways, enjoy your cruise and summer. Don't do something stupid like work or summer school like I did and am doing.

Thanks UVAMalex09. Yes, I guess I can see your point on how various postings can become quite annoying and uninspiring. I'm starting the process of letting-go. I'm tired of worrying about admissions crap. I signed up for the random roommate/dorm assignment today, and next week I fly to Barcelona!! I'm gonna leave it all behind, and follow your advice to the letter: no "work or summer school".

What if you are submitting the ACT?

i would be less annoyed if the admissions officers didnt spend half an hour on this at your summer orientation session and you get to ask all of your questions to them who dont mind saying the same thing 20 times. which is what i said. google + orientation = all the answers to your problems/questions on this thread.

i love answering questions about things that can't be found online - life at uva, specific course questions (what is the BEST course to take for xxx requirement, which professor, etc)... i mean some of that can be found on ratemyprof but personal experience helps too. in the other thread (for lang) telling how spanish and asl fill up quickly is not something you can find online. asking me what score places you into what, well that can be found through some other means.

not once have you asked what the enwr courses are about, what the differences are, etc... i mean that kind of stuff is useful for you to know, right? thats the kind of thing we are better qualified to tell you about. we shouldn't be your personal google or adm-off.

i dont even read chances threads haha. i bother to read these to 1. direct someone to google something i know exists on the uva website or 2. hopefully find a q that has no answer on the website. then when it turns out to be 1 instead of 2 im annoyed by that point lol. i mean this branch of the forum was made in 2004 but i was a member long before that and so ive seen these kinds of questions every year.

every year i suggest pinning up a thread with the links to these things but i dont know how to do that and i never get a response and so it just annoys me when i know this has been answered not only before on this forum but also specifically on the website.

im sorry if the website is confusing to other ppl i had no problem w it myself so maybe i just dont understand sorry (lol).

The writing portion on the ACT is not recognized at UVA. You get nothing from the ACT. Too bad, so sad.

I'm exempt right if I got a 790 on my SAT Writing? I looked at my VISTAA report though but it didn't say I was exempt. Will they change it soon and I should just wait or should I inform them?

"not once have you asked what the enwr courses are about, what the differences are, etc... i mean that kind of stuff is useful for you to know, right? thats the kind of thing we are better qualified to tell you about. we shouldn't be your personal google or adm-off."

I see where you are coming from, particularly if you've been following this for some time now. I agree, I don't even go to the "chance me" threads anymore.
Your advice is good. I am going to do my best to piece together a plan for orientation, have my list of questions and just go from there. It's a special summer and I'm gonna have a ball!
Hey, your point that I put in quotes above is a good one. Why do they have different ENWR? What are they about? Any personal recommendations on your part.
I see you're at Brown College. That sounds like a lot of fun, and pretty too!

Joanee49, just wait. They already know.

my exemption didn't show up until i emailed them 5 times during the schoolyear making sure they put it up - however right now it is not a good time bc they already have enough on their plate to do. wait until a month after school starts and you might get some headway.

the enwr courses are literally about any topic you can think of. one of my friends took one where they watched hitchcock movies and wrote response type papers. the difference between 110 and 210 seems to be purely level as both offer unique topics that will hopefully keep you interested in writing. it will probably get old by the end but it's a lot better than coming to a big lecture where they make you identify what part of speech each word is, which is how most colleges do it. the only downside is that you have to stalk isis to get into the one you want usually as each one is what, 10-20 students? somewhere in there, and since the incoming grade is 3200 then excluding exemptions 1600 people are trying to register for these courses every semester. im not sure if thats how the numbers actually play out but basically its hard to get into the one you want sometimes.
