Hey guys I'm a first year bio major that was accepted last year, I'll try to answer some questions that come up while I take study breaks for finals!

What classes did you take this year?

what were your stats when you got accepted?

urizar:
I took MCDB 1A, chem 1A, anth 2, chem 1AL (lab), mcdb 1BL (lab), you can take bio early if you passed ap test with 4+, but it is HARD. My GPA first quarter pass/failing anth 2 was 3.51. At the moment I’m taking 19 units: MCDB 1B, EEMB 2, MCDB 1BL, Chem 1B, Chem 1BL, Practice of Science, Math 34B (part 2 of calculus series).

smileyangel123:
3.5 weighted GPA, 2k SAT, 250 hours hospital volunteering, average AP scores, applied for direct entry into Bio major. I had like 6 C’s between start of junior year and end of senior year, screwed up hard in high school.
These were my stats from back in the day:
10th grade:
World History (H) NH Semester B B
English 10 (H) NH Semester A A
Pre-Calculus (H) HL Semester B B

11th grade:

UC Ethnicity: Other Asian (not including Middle Eastern): Burmese

I applied for Pre-Biology…Do you think I have a good chance?
UC GPA: 3.6
SAT 1: 1860
UC Ethnicity: Asian / Vietnamese
First one in my family to attend college.
California resident.
LOTS of extracular activities activities. Involved in clubs. Worked during high school. Had only two C’s throughout high school. I think my essays were well written. Do they bother considering alternative major?

Based on the applicant pool this year, I think you might actually be a bit on the low side, though the UC system is hit or miss. I’ve had people with much better stats than me get rejected and people with stats lower get in. There’s still a decent chance you may get in though. They do consider major actually. If you get into your major, you get class priority for that major whereas if you apply undeclared you don’t get any priority for classes like chem which are essential for the intro classes.

How difficult is it to maintain a 3.5ish + GPA? What is your daily life like at SB? Also, on average how many hours do you spend studying a day?

i pulled off a 3.5 with about 2 hours of studying on regular day, but atm when finals come around, i spend on average 7-9 hours a day. I’d say if you actually do what you’re supposed to, pulling off a 3.5 isn’t so hard. If you party nights before big tests, well then that’s when **** goes wrong. Daily life is very laid back and is quite enjoyable. The people are quite nice to hang around with as well.

hey redlegfro, my stats are gpa: 3.82 UC, sat: 2110, solid ec( 2 year varsity track, combined 600+ volunteer hours, leader at hospital volunteer, speech and debate team, won a couple awards) and solid essays. what do my chances look like? i’ve been rejected from davis and san diego so far, with no word from irvine, and ive only gotten into riverside, so needless to say, i’m pretty flustered right now haha

btw, i just wanna say i really appreciate you for taking time out of your life to field questions from us, thanks!

Am I good enough for math? I’m a transfer student with a 3.27 GPA

I applied for pre biology and was accepted at the ucsb reception. I’m heavily considering UCSB this fall. For pre biology, do you have to take a lot of math classes? Are the college chemistry classes harder than AP Chem in high school? I took AP Chem last year. :)

iberick:
i think you’ll get in
melweaver:
i think your gpa may be a teeny bit low but depends where you’re transferring from. is it out of state or in state?
curiousJDG9513:
if you had a decent ap chem class its EXACTLY the same with a bit added on. I only need to take one calc class since i got a 4 on the ap calc exam and 4 on ap stats. for deciding to go to UCSB, its a wonderful school in my opinion. You don’t have to party though it is fun in moderation PM me for class req skipping details if you still need it.

Side Note: I’ll try to check this thread whenever i remember, I got a chain of finals coming up.
