I just received my first year course catalog. How many courses do first years typically enroll in at one time?

Five full-year courses, or the equivalent.

You may feel a little overwhelmed with the course listing material (including the "Calendar"). Try to digest the parts that may apply to you. When possible, consult the "Anti-Calendar" --- the student sponsored course-and-professor assessment bible. Don't hesitate to call the Dean of Students in your college with questions --- they're extremely helpful and know the ropes.

Be optimistic about your course selections but don't expect to get into them exactly when you want. A required course in your major may be unavailable the first time you try. That elective course on the JFK assassination analysis is just as interesting to everyone else.

What matters, too, are the times and distances between classes. UofT is big, and assume many of your classes will be off your particular college's campus.

ROSI, or the Repository for Student Information, is how you'll be registering for UofT at-large courses. Students are given staged start times for registrations, and upperclassmen get to register first. Courses fill in the blink of an eye and you must have backup and backup backup plans before your registration time (my D drew up a flow chart for the possibilities so she could respond instantly --- and she really used it).
