Charlottesville is pretty cold in the winter (live like two hours away) like this time of the year. So distance seems bad enough. But i am doing new dorms (I am not sure why) lol

Out of curiosity, how long does it take to get from Hereford to say, Central Grounds? Do you walk or is there a bus to take?

Hereford is a long way from classes. There is a bus stop near Hereford that would take you to central grounds so definitely take advantage of it.

Wow! A blast from the past - it doesn't sound like the dorms have changed very much in 25 years. I was in Page my first year and Smith (now part of Brown) my second, third and fourth years (had the same bathroom all three years there.) The location was great - close to the Tool School and the music department. Good luck to all you new 'Hoos.

Well, I've heard the old dorms are more "Social", you know being that there are a lot more people available to hang out with...I would like to be in a newer dorm, but what's a new dorm w/o anyone to chill with?!

Also, those "new" dorms in hallway style, does it resemble the old dorms? Also are THESE new dorm rooms bigger?

UVA people--what's the deal with the Echols scholars' dorms?

To those in the know: would Brown be a good choice for an out of state who wants the academic side of UVA but can do without the preppy/Greek scene? And also a little concerned about the size of UVA?

I think Brown College would be a good choice for you. That residential college has a pretty close-knit community that tends to attract the creative types at UVa.

yay, there are people like me out there! I was thinking Brown would be good for me too, for the same reasons.

New Dorms, specifically called Alderman Road Housing really isn't that much newer than "Old Dorms." In fact they were built a few years after the dorms in McCormick were built. There are two exceptions, Cauthen and Woody which were built in Alderman road a few years ago. I live in Alderman and the suite style dorms is a plus in my opinion - less people to deal with in showers, the rooms are slightly bigger and probably more laid back. The suites in Alderman also allow those living to build closer, more family-oriented relationships among roomates. Old dorms are more social but it's a little more difficult to really get to know your hallmates since there are more people in a residence hall (30-40 people) than a suite(10-12).
