First year Foundations classes

Is it normal to be bored or frustrated with these introductory classes? So far my daughter finds them to be a repetition of her precollege program.

I have heard some do find them dull. Bear in mind: things will ramp up rather quickly once the ‘boring’ stuff is done. The boring bits are to get everyone on the same page, skill/knowledge-wise. My advice is to do your best even if it seems tedious or dull. Surely there’s something you can improve on. And if not, just use this as a time to strengthen skills–and feel lucky that you are ahead of the curve. Soon you will not be.

It’s a lot like playing scales is for a musician. Seems dull but very vital to have those basic foundations down.

I think that school has only been in session for a short time and once the teachers get basics out of the way, things should get better. But, if your child had an exceptional studio program in high school, that might take longer than for others. This is no different than any other beginning class. My dd loves her art classes (even though some are review), but she can’t believe how basic her writing class is! In her school the writing program was exceptional and different, so now she is bored in that class! I think it is the same in any program where your child has had good training (at least in the beginning).

Foundation classes for some who went through very rigorous and advanced art courses in high school years can be a real bore. Additionally they are often taught by people who are recent graduates. For all the talk of repetition being like doing scales that depends on the foundation class and the school. Depends on what you consider a good solid foundation. If it’s approached as a method of creating group think about art and what constitutes “good” art then it’s really not such a great thing. And I think that often is the approach. Also if it’s only about how to “think” about art and no teaching of technical skills or hands-on work in a chosen field until a year or 2 later then it definitely will be a bore to anyone who’s already been working in their chosen field. I think foundation years are really for groups of kids who have had perfunctory high school art classes. Where is your daughter?

Hi artsmarts - I will send you a PM

If your daughter finds them boring and Is truly more advanced, she ought to be able to show her previous work to the professor and ask if she can be given more challenging projects.
