Hi, I was just wondering if there is way to increase your chances of getting into a specific residence hall as first year students are usually assigned at random. Will submitting my housing application early or writing a letter to someone increase my chances? Thanks.
@rayzerj I do know people who brownnosed their way into getting a specific room that they wanted but I haven’t heard about that with residence halls. I suppose it doesn’t hurt to try writing a letter to someone.
@rayzerj I believe that there is some type of survey/questionnaire that attempts to figure out your interests (sustainability, social innovation, etc.), and this may influence where you are assigned to, but I’m not too entirely sure about the magnitude of its impact.
The survey had no relation to my dorm and calling the housing office had no impact (I think an algorithm chooses rooms). However, you can indicate if you would prefer single-sex, mixed, or grouped housing. This does influence your placement and you can see what the arrangement of each dorm is on the housing website. Generally, the newer dorms (Longstreet-Means, Raoul, ect.) are coed and the older (complex) are single-sex floors.
There is a survey and I think it does have an influence on your door, although there are definitely other influences too. I got Global Cultures as one of my highest values, I still don’t really know how, but I did get put in Longstreet. I also only had coed floors for my housing preferences which also have an influence. So basically figure out what theme the dorm you want is and what type of floors do they have. For example, if you want one of the newer dorms or a suite (LSM Raoul) then value diversity, global cultures, and social justice stuff and then put a higher preference for coed floors.
