What types of activities take place during FYI? Not related, but do most order textbooks online and have them delivered to the dorm as the flyer suggested at orientation?

That's from 2006...it seems like the same as when I went to FYI in 2004. Nothing really interesting happens and most people skip a good portion of the events (many of which are set-up to dissuade students for go to parties/bars on the first couple of nights). As far as the summer reading, it's not really mandatory as I never read it and was never asked anything about the book during the group discussion.

About ordering books, you can probably save a lot of money by buying books online at places like half.com rather than buying at the bookstore in shriver. The bookstores off-campus, dubois and follets, price their books to be the same or a little less than the campus bookstore. Make sure you buy any required books(lab notes or professor lecture notes), that aren't sold anywhere online, ASAP as they sometimes sell out quickly and you may have to wait a week or two to get them.
